Homer Highlights

Week of April 19, 2021

Dear Families,

There is a lot happening at Homer Community Schools! Last week, Mr. Michael Leskowich began his new position as Superintendent! We completed our state mandated testing for 8th - 11th grade, and we were able to come back to in-person learning! Our student athletes are beginning their spring sports competitions, and we are working on finalizing plans for end of year events such as band concerts, honors nights and graduation! So many of these events are contingent on what is allowable at any given time, but it is our intention to try to finish the year with as much normalcy as possible for all of our students! We appreciate the ongoing support that our parents and communities have shown to our students and staff throughout this year!!!

Testing Update!

We were able to complete all regular 8th - 11th grade PSAT/SAT testing last week! Students that were absent on testing days will have an opportunity to do make-up testing on the following dates:
  • 8th grade PSAT - Tuesday, 4/27
  • 11grade SAT - Tuesday, 4/27
  • 11th grade WorkKeys - Wednesday, 4/28
  • 9th and 10th grade PSAT - Thursday, 4/29

M-Step Testing will begin for 3rd - 8th grade students in May. Please reference the calendar below for all testing information! Remember, all in-person students must complete state testing. All fully-virtual students have the option to participate in state testing, but it is not required.

Parent and Community Feedback Wanted for MS Principal Search

Homer Community Schools will soon begin the process of interviewing candidates for the upcoming principal vacancy in the middle school. Selecting the next instructional leader of our district is an important and essential task, and we value the input and advice of our great school community.

To help the selection committee form their interview questions and to pinpoint our desired qualifications and experiences, we are asking parents and community members in the district to tell us what they're looking for in our next principal. We would like to know what top three traits you think are essential for our next principal to have. These traits could be specific knowledge, experience, qualities, skills, or characteristics.

The search committee will use the information gathered to find the best candidate that will meet the students' needs. Please submit your answers to this questionnaire by April 23rd to give our committee plenty of time to review your answers. Thank you in advance for your time and input.

Minniear Finishes Season Placing 3rd at State!

Senior Melvin Minniear finished his Homer High School wrestling season and career by finishing 3rd at the state wrestling meet on April 3rd! Way to go, Melvin!!!

HMS and HHS Bands Receive Top Scores!

Congratulations to the Homer High School and Homer MIddle School Bands! Both received straight 1 ratings at the MSBOA Virtual Band Festival. This is an amazing accomplishment in a normal year, but exceptional in a year like 2020-21!! Thank you to Mr. Scott McMeeking for providing amazing direction to our students to keep our music program not just alive, but thriving!!!

S-U-C-C-E-S-S at Jackson County Spelling Bee!

Congratulations to our Homer Middle School contestants that participated in the Jackson County Spelling Bee sponsored by the Jackson Citizen Patriot. For the first time ever, the spelling bee was held in a virtual format, with students having to complete both a spelling and a vocabulary/definition portion. Zionah Gardner was the overall 8th grade champion speller and finished 2nd overall in the regional competition! Jordan Gibson tied for 6th place overall, and Hailey Rocco tied for 7th place overall! Khloe Fisher was our local 5th grade winner that also participated in the county competition. Congratulations to all of our spellers!

Help the Team Reach Their Goal!!!

COVID restrictions have made fundraising more difficult this year, but our Homer Competitive Cheer Teams, under the direction of Coach Hannah Philson, are still determined to meet their goal of raising enough funds to purchase a new set of mats to accommodate practicing for both the HS and MS teams! The online fundraiser can be accessed directly from the link below, and all ordered items are shipped directly to the purchaser's home! The fundraiser site closes on Tuesday, April 20 at midnight!

Student Congrats!!!
