Weekly Happenings
This week, we learned how to find small moments from a big topic and turn those small moments into stories. Each learner received his/her own "notebook" in which to scribe small moments. We learned how authors choose their words wisely, reread their work many times, and are constantly perfecting their craft. As a result, we worked to emulate those concepts in our writing.
We also discussed common Easter traditions.
In spelling, we talked about words with the long i sound spelled with i-e and igh (as in pie and tight).
In social studies, we began our PBL "Change for a Cure" in which we are partnering with Leukemia Texas to collect coins and write letters for patients.
In math, we began a graphing unit, focusing on bar, pictograph, and tally charts.
In science, we continued our unit on solids and liquids. The learners participated in hands-on investigations to determine what materials solids are made up of and how to describe their properties.
As a part of first grade’s service learning initiative, our learners are partnering with the non-profit organization, Leukemia Texas. Our learners have been charged with the task of collecting coins to donate to Leukemia patients. First graders will be in charge of sharing our collection drive with the school, gathering the coins as they’re donated, and counting coins. Learners will also write letters and draw pictures of encouragement to patients. The donations will take place March 24-April 22nd and we hope to beat last year's generous donation amount of $1000!
NO VOLUNTEERS/VISITORS on March 29th, 30th, & 31st!
Please note that next Tuesday, Wednesday, & Thursday (March 29-31) there will be NO VISITORS allowed throughout the building due to state testing mandates. Therefore, all volunteers, lunch dates with children, etc. will be cancelled.
Thank you for your understanding and consideration of our Lakeside learners.
