HMS Bearcat Bulletin

January 2019

A Note from Ms. Buschmann

I started working on the schedule for next year and almost went into shock when I titled it "2019-2020." Growing up, thinking about the year 2000 seemed inconceivable and now we are planning for 2020. Adulthood certainly brings some perspective.

Please note that the make-up days for the snow/ice days we have had so far are January 21; February 18; and May 16, 17, and 20.

Response to Intervention (RTI)

Some of you may have recently gotten letters indicating that your son/daughter is getting an intervention as part of our RTI process. This has raised questions from some, so I thought I would provide more information.

Response to Intervention is a fancy term for a pretty straight forward concept. The overall idea is for us, as a school and as grade-level teams, to look at everyone's skills and provide targeted teaching- called interventions- to help those with skill or knowledge deficits be on-par with their peers.

Our teams look at student work as well as the results of our NWEA benchmark assessments that we give in the fall, winter, and spring to inform our decision about who may need additional instruction. The NWEA assessment provides a wealth of information about what a student is able to do and how he or she compares with peers here at HMS and across the nation.

A few questions parents have had- with some answers/

What class is my student being pulled from for this extra instruction? None. We do our interventions during Bearcat Time so they are not missing out on any other class.

My students grade in math/reading is fine, so why are they getting an intervention? Grades are an indication of what students know and can do, but not the complete pictures. Effort and homework completion (which can be done with a lot of support) also factor in to a students' grade.

How long will this intervention last? We will reassess student placement in 8 weeks or so. In the meantime, intervention teachers are gathering data. If that indicates that a student has made significant gains, he or she may be reassigned at that time.

What are students doing during the intervention time? Depending on the need of the student, he or she may be working on reinforcement of recent lessons or re-teaching of fundamental skills that he or she has not yet mastered.

We are very excited as a staff to be able to provide this opportunity to our students. It was pretty easy for me to just place them in homework groups and tell students to work on something during bearcat time. It has been a tremendous amount of work for our staff and in particular, our RTI Leadership Team to analyze data, make instructional decisions and plan additional lessons for each student to get what he or she needs. If you have additional questions, please do not hesitate to ask.

Student of the Month

The character trait for the month of December was confidence. Confidence can be seen in a student standing up for themselves or others; choosing to do the right thing, even when others may not be, and in taking failure or disappointment in stride. It is the confident student that can miss a math problem, take note of what he or she did wrong and fix it the next time or miss a couple of shots in a row in a game, but shoot his or her way out of a slump. Thomas Edison said, "I have not failed. I've just found 10,000 ways that won't work." That is the speech of a confident man and a mindset we could all benefit from.
