The Lumberjack Edge
Cedar Mill Elementary School
April 20, 2018
Dear Cedar Mill Community,
I would like to take this opportunity to reiterate the message from our School Board and Superintendent in light of recent events: "We recognize the value and worth of each and every one of our students who come through our doors. We are committed to ensuring all students have every opportunity to reach their potential. Our staff work hard every day to support our wonderfully diverse students and families, and we are committed to learning from our mistakes and continuing this work."
At Cedar Mill, we value each and every student and family, and it is our privileged to work with such a diverse and caring community. Each day, our staff strives to make Cedar Mill a safe and welcoming environment for each and every person who walks through our doors. We value the partnership with our families and it is important that each student and family feels respected.
We are committed to providing a caring, compassionate, and inclusive environment which provides opportunities for ALL students to reach their full potential. We stand behind the district's equity policy and supporting each and every student and family at Cedar Mill.
Sincerely,
Amy Chamberlain

Science and Engineering Fair Thank You
Once again, the PTC-sponsored event was a huge success with around 270 students participating, and representing over 160 projects, including some class projects! Makerspace was open, the Future Bus was here, and Mad Science helped keep visitors engaged. Nearly 80 volunteers gave their time to make sure kids' projects got reviewed twice, kids got certificates and prizes, and that the event ran smoothly.
Special gratitude goes to:
Jessica Baker, Aleida Adams - co-chairs
Melissa Potter - reviewers
Nicole Matson - reviewer support
Sam Kuhn, Devri Donnelly - Scavenger Hunt
Lisa Carter, Baya Batomunkueva - Prizes
Elizabeth Schiewe - Posters
Ignacio Alvarez - Printing
Renee Niepoky, Dorothy Furquim - General support
Valerie Ristau - T-shirt design, project evaluations
Project evaluations - Janell Hosch, Julie Peterson, Devri Donnelly, Natasha Seifert, staff
Mrs. Snyder gave feedback and guidance from start to finish, and well as helping evaluate projects and letting us use her classroom for the event
Mrs. Thom opened up the MakerSpace, and ran it the entire evening
Ms. Bone helped evaluate projects during the day and volunteered as a reviewer at the event
Mr. Coker and Mrs. McKernan made sure we had tables and a clean space, and also helped our vendors
Mrs. Fenning sold our project boards and sent crucial emails to the community
Ms. Joehnk volunteered at the prize table at the event
Ms. Donald, Mrs. Moses, and Mr. Marino let us use their classrooms for the event.
All classroom teachers helped collect entry forms, communicate with families, and let us interrupt their teaching when needed. Thanks to those of you who attended last night!
Parents who supported their students learning through scientific inquiry and/or engineering design.
The Science Fair is a huge undertaking, and it wouldn't be possible without everyone's support and flexibility. Thank you for supporting the curiosity of Cedar Mill students!
Upcoming Physical Fitness Test
Our school will be administering a physical fitness test (fitnessgram) to all third, fourth, and fifth graders during the next few weeks. This test is an individual performance test, which measures your child's level of current physical fitness.
The test measures the main components of physical fitness: aerobic capacity, muscular strength, muscular endurance, and flexibility. There are five test activities that measure these components. They are as follows:
1) Pacer run (aerobic capacity)
2) Curl-ups (abdominal strength/endurance)
3) Push-ups (upper body strength/endurance)
4) Trunk lift (trunk extensor strength & flexibility)
5) Shoulder stretch and sit & reach (flexibility)
The result of this test will be used as a motivating device for the students, and a diagnostic aid. The results of this test will be available to parents upon request. If you have any questions at all, please contact me at the school.
Sincerely,
Chris Marino

Due to summer work taking place at Cedar Mill and Ridgewood schools this summer, the entire four week session will take place only at West TV from July 9 to August 2nd, 9:00 to 2:00, and is open to incoming Kinders through 5th grade. Registration forms are located in the school office and provided in an attachment below.

Parent Input Forms
Parent input forms for the 2018-19 school year will be available for pick up in the school office starting April 9th and due no later than May 4th at 4:00pm. The purpose of the form is to gather parent input to assist with creating balanced class lists for the upcoming school year. Requests for specific teachers are not accepted nor is there a guarantee that a sibling will automatically get an older sibling's teacher. Parents will be notified of class placements in August.
SBAC Testing
Students in grades 3-5 will begin the Smarter Balanced Assessment the week of May 7th. Look for more information from your child’s teacher as the date approaches as to specific dates your child will participate.
Each year, parents may choose to opt their child(ren) out of state testing, as required by House Bill 2655. Opt out forms can be found in the office and must be submitted prior to the start of testing.
School Starts Early Next Year!
As you look toward making plans for the summer, don't forget that school will start early next year. Our start date is before Labor Day on August 27th! To view the entire 2018-2019 Beaverton School District Calendar, visit the BSD Calendars page.
What's Cooking?
At school, there’s always a meal ready to be served! Some mornings, it’s tough to find the time to make sure your kids are eating a nutritious breakfast. On those days, why not send them to the School Breakfast Program? Each meal meets government nutritional guidelines and standards. Schools are required to provide a breakfast meal that includes fruit, whole-grain rich items, and low fat or fat free milk. Check your child’s menu to see the variety of nutritious choices available at School Breakfast, or stop by to sample the food yourself!
School Board Passes Resolution to Authorize Local Option Levy Renewal
The Beaverton School Board on Monday, Jan. 22, 2018 unanimously adopted a resolution to place a 5-year Local Option Levy Renewal on the May 15, 2018 ballot. This is a vote-by-mail election.
If approved, the Local Option Levy Renewal would allow Beaverton schools to preserve 300 teaching positions, maintain class sizes, and help ensure students are prepared for post-high school success. The levy renewal costs $1.25 per $1,000 assessed property value. Homes with the median assessed value of $238,000 would continue to pay less than $25 per month. The levy could raise approximately $31-$35 million a year.
In 2013, voters approved a five-year local option levy to restore teaching positions that had been cut due to repeated state funding shortfalls. The levy has raised $128 million, and 100% has remained in Beaverton schools to fund approximately 300 teaching positions and reduce class sizes. In the 2017-2018 school year, 158 of these positions were allocated to Beaverton's elementary schools, 53 to middle schools, 70 to high schools, and 18 to options schools. (Six teachers at Cedar Mill are funded through the current Local Option Levy.)
Science Fair
Following last Thursday’s event at Cedar Mill, 20 projects were under consideration to represent our school at the district fair. It was an incredibly difficult decision to select the projects and the selection committee was impressed with each and every one. All of the projects were creative, thoughtful, and innovative and displayed a level of scientific thinking beyond our expectations. We are so proud of ALL participants! Always keep questioning, experimenting, and learning. Science Rocks!
