Congratulations to Adamaris Lopez Morales and Anna Rocha for taking 1st and 2nd place in the Hermanas Challenge to select a historic female figure who has made a difference in our society through advances in science, work in social justice, or contributions to the economy, and describe/design an app that would have increased their successes and efforts.

FRENCH CLASSES CELEBRATE LA CHANDELEUR
In France, February starts with the celebration of Candlemas- la Chandeleur. The holiday fell on Saturday, February 2nd, and French classes celebrated by making crêpes during last week’s block days. CHINESE NEW YEAR FIELD TRIP
Last Friday, all Chinese classes went to downtown Phoenix to attend the Chinese New Year Festival. The festival provided many exciting activities and performances that represented Chinese culture, such as the lion dance, a traditional Chinese dance, where two to several people dressed in colorful lion costumes dance to the beat of the drum. In addition, students saw Chinese souvenirs such as wooden fans, rice hats, jade jewelry, and sculptures of the twelve zodiac animals. They also saw name writing in Chinese calligraphy and enjoyed authentic Chinese food. Overall, this exciting Chinese New Year Festival is a long-awaited event for all Chinese language students!

Mindfulness
Our High School Health and Wellness Program is encouraging students to learn to use MINDFULLNESS to cope with the stress and anxiety of life as a teenager and prevent the use of drugs and alcohol.
Here are some MINDFULLNESS apps for teens:
Stop, Breathe, and Think. Teens like this app because it opens with a short "interview" where the user selects several words to describe how they are feeling, and then the app recommends guided meditations for their current state.
Smiling Mind. Designed for adolescents (and teens generally love anything with an Australian or British accent!)
Take a Break! Not necessarily just for teens, but it provides short guided meditations for stress relief.
Next time you are feeling stressed or anxious, consider giving one of them a try!
For more information about our Health and Wellness Program at Chandler High School, contact the Prevention Coach, Sarah Hunter at 480-812-7709 or Project Staff Heather Dyke at 480-812-7983.
