A MINUTE WITH DR. MAXWELL
Dear East Families,
Hopefully you and your family had a wonderful holiday season. It was nice to have a few days off from school, but we are excited to welcome everyone back for a great second semester.
One of our New Year’s Resolutions is to keep excellent records and improve communication with families. In order to do this we are asking for your help. It is imperative that we have an up to date home phone number, cell phone numbers, and current email addresses. If you have recently had a change, please make sure to call school for any updates. It is important to have your voicemail setup so that we may leave a message, especially in case of an emergency. Also, if you have not been receiving emails from me, then please call to confirm your email address. Thank you very much for your assistance.
January 7-11 students will be given an i-Ready winter benchmark. The benchmark test is given three times a year (September, January, and May). These tests are given by a classroom or reading teacher. The results of i-Ready provide us with a student’s reading and math levels. Teachers use the scores to group students into leveled groups which allow us to differentiate instruction and meet the needs of EVERY child. Parents can help improve fluency at home by practicing reading passages aloud with their child. Also, have your child read aloud to you and see how many words they can read in one minute. Next, have your child try to beat that number and read the passage a second time. Any extra math fact practice will also help your children build fluency and speed.
East Elementary family and friends, thank you for your support. Enjoy your January.

Each year the Jackson R-2 Foundation gives back to our teachers and students. Teachers submit grants to the foundation to fund specific needs for their class or for a project. This year there were many grants awarded and 19 of them went to East teachers. Our teachers will receive a total of $9,073.81 in grant money. Please help us congratulate these teachers for the grants they were awarded.

MRS. MOYERS' MESSAGE
The next Family Information Session will be held on Thursday, January 31, 2019 at 7:30 a.m. in the library. When I sent the survey about Family Information Sessions this fall, many of the parents who responded indicated that academics was a topic they were interested in discussing. Please take a couple of minutes to indicate what specific academic topics you would like to talk about by clicking on this form.
At the first Family Information Session in November, I talked to parents about bullying. If you were unable to attend, you can watch the presentation here.
NEWS FROM THE NURSES
Please make sure to keep your child home until they are 24 hours free of sickness. If they have a fever, the 24 hour time would be: fever free for 24 hours without Motrin or Tylenol given during that time. This will help keep our students from passing sickness back and forth at school. Please continue to encourage frequent hand washing, coughing in elbow, and drinking plenty of water during the school day.
Thank you!
Roller Skating in P.E.
Once again, beginning on Jan. 14th, 2019, our PE classes (2nd - 4th grade) will be participating in a 3 week in-house roller skating program. Please make sure your child wears good thick socks on PE day. Thanks to East’s PTO and our successful fundraisers, there is no charge for the students to participate. We rent the skates form a company called Skatetime.
This skating unit is being implemented because of its emphasis as a “lifetime activity”. Skating provides a variety of benefits including balance, coordination, motor skills & a cardio workout.
Wrist guards will be provided by Skatetime, I will require the students to wear them. Skatetime does not provide helmets. If you wish for your child to wear a helmet, please send one for them on their scheduled PE day. Be sure to mark the helmet with your child’s name. If there is any other protective gear you would like your child to wear please send it as well. The skating program will take place in the gym. If you have any concerns or do not want your child to skate please send a note or call me @ 243-5271. I can provide them with an alternative activity.
Thanks,
Coach Zack Walton

COMMUNICATION CORNER
LEARNING COMMUNICATION THROUGH PLAY
Amy Brueckner, MA, CCC-SLP, Julie Layton, MA, CCC-SLP, Lori Heuring, MA, CCC-SLP
A child makes sense of the world through play. When we play with our children, we stimulate talking and learning. Learning language is best accomplished when a child feels no pressure to communicate. Play is the best time to have fun and teach your child. The following activities provide some examples:
1. Allow plenty of time for “free play”. During this time, place no pressure or expectations on your child. Just play, talk, and provide positive feedback.
2. Help your child discover new ways to play with a favorite toy. (Adult: “Wow, you threw the ball. Look, I’m bouncing it.”).
3. Play rhyming games and pair it with body movements. Example: say, “One, two, buckle my shoe” while you bend down together and pretend to buckle shoes.
4. Play “Follow the Leader” and describe your movements as you play. (Say, “take baby steps, clap your hands over your head, walk fast”).
