News From the CORE Classes
Social Studies
We are wrapping our geography unit on regions and states in the next few weeks. Students are working on student recognition and geography terminology. We are also almost finished with our citizenship unit based on the novel Schooled. The kids are also working with various technology skills including presentation tools and general computer skills. I appreciate their hard work!
Math
We are finishing up powers of 10, multiplying by 10s and multi-digit multiplication this week. I have several students who could benefit by practicing their basic multiplication facts. They really have to be able to recall them quickly in order to master the standards that we are working on and those we will be working on. I have found several apps that are fun and also helpful for fact practice: “Bubble Pop Math Challenge, Quiz Dungeon, Number Run, Mayan Multiplication and Mathopolis are some of the ones that they can try.
Our next unit is division. (Multiplication facts are so important for division!)
Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns.
Literacy
I am so proud of the kids for participating in our performance of the poem Squished Squirrel. I’ve seem improvement in the completion of our reading logs, however, we still have a few not completed. We are finishing the novel study of Love that Dog and moving into narrative writing. In addition, we are focusing on sophisticated words, transition words, and commas in a series.
Science
We are doing a unit on matter and will start a unit on physical change in the coming weeks. The students are working hard!
