Team 9 Core Classes
Language Arts
We just started a brand new unit in Language Arts! Our third unit of the year is all about technology. The essential question we will be exploring is:
"What ethical issues should be considered in the advancement of technology?"
We have spent quite a bit of time talking about what the word 'ethical' means and brainstorming different technologies we see today that may have ethical concerns. Ask your student questions about this topic at home!
In Unit 3, the major texts we will be reading are "Flowers for Algernon" by Daniel Keyes (short story) and Frankenstein by Mary Shelley (only a few chapters from the novel). We will also be reading lots of current event non-fiction pieces that involve technology. We will wrap this unit up before spring break with a research project.
Please feel free to e-mail me at any time with questions or concerns about your student's progress in Language Arts. I am happy to help with all of your needs! Thank you for sharing your student with me--I'm having a great school year with this group of 8th graders.

Math- Williams
Tuesday, students will be completing their Amazing Town Projects in math. This is an 80% assignment. Students have 5 school days to turn it in if it is late for a 5% reduction in grade. Students may redo this assignment. They have 5 school days after their grades post to redo. Please encourage your student to come in to tutoring for help. They can also check Schoology or email me.
Wednesday, we will be starting our Scientific Notation mini unit. It is a self-paced, personalized-learning unit. This is a great chance for your student to see if they would like to be on a Personalized Learning team next year at JCHS. Students will work their way through the Scientific Notation folder on Schoology, watch videos and take notes in their notebooks, complete the assignments on Schoology, and take their final assessment. This mini unit is due on FEBRUARY 27, 2020. Students will have at least 2 complete days to work on this unit in class. They may also come in during their WINN time on Wednesdays or during tutor times. Please encourage your student to get help if they need it!

US History
Our first unit for the new year is the Industrial Revolution!
This week we are studying the many changes that the Industrial Revolution of the mid 1800's brought to the United States. In addition to industrialization, we are also looking at how immigration and urbanization affected the United States. We will also look at inventions and how they impacted these rapid changes that occurred in the mid-1800's.

Science
Hey all!
Wow, what a crazy and exciting first few weeks back from Christmas break! We have started our Biology Unit where we will be working towards answering the question, "How do eggs become chicks?" We have focused the last few weeks on building up to investigating this question.
This semester we will be doing storylines, which allows students to take ownership of their learning. Therefore, as a class, we decided that the first investigation step is bringing in chick eggs and an incubator, and monitoring the progress of the egg development over time. It has been so fun to watch students get excited about their learning.
As always, do not hesitate to contact me with any questions or concerns!
