Mental Disabilities

What does it mean to be mentally disabled?

Mental Retardation is a very complex problem that deals with medical, social, and educational difficulties. Mental illnesses can "...exists in children whose brains do not develop properly or function within the normal range. There are four levels of retardation: mild, moderate, severe, and profound. Sometimes, MR/ID may be classified as other or unspecified. Mental retardation involves both a low IQ and problems adjusting to everyday life.MR/ID can result in learning, speech, physical, and social disabilities. Severe cases are diagnosed at birth. However, milder forms might not be noticed until a child fails to meet a common developmental goal. Almost all cases of MR/ID are diagnosed by the time a child reaches 18 years of age (Johnson)".

Thier Senses

People who have mental disabilities tend to enjoy and receive different types of therapy like petting animals to being around people and working on their skills.

Treatment in the 1930s

Most people of this treated them poorly and called them Lunatics. Depending on how severe their condition is, they were locked away. While they were locked away the conditions of these asylums were harsh. Patients received restraints or even shock therapy where the patient would be shocked to calm down. After a while in the mid 1930s some patients received a special surgery. According to Kimberly Leupo, "The original lobotomy was a medical procedure where the neural passages from the front of the brain are surgically separated from those in the back of the brain. The common result of this procedure was the patient forgetting their depressing or discouraging feelings or tendencies. (Leupo)"

Treatment today

Today there is nothing they can really do to treat this, instead they have specialized Aids who help them "develop the person's potential to the fullest. (Health Solutions)" People who have mental disabilities are treated much better due to everyone being more educated.
