Professional Development Update

More Next Gen Learning Standards

As we continue to move through Phase 2 of the Next Generation Learning Standards for ELA and Mathematics, we shift our focus to building capacity. It's easy to get caught up in the jargon, but all this really means is that we are moving beyond developing a baseline understanding of the new standards, to designing professional learning opportunities that provide educators the tools to implement them. See some examples of our Next Generation Learning Standards professional development sessions below.

There is still a lot of learning to be ahead of us but, by working together, we will all be well-prepared.

Best Wishes,

The CIPD Team

Moving Beyond the Literal: Teaching Students to Interpret Texts

Wednesday, March 20, 2019 from 12:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Have you been finding that your students are relying too heavily on the teacher to help them interpret the deeper meanings of texts? How do we guide students toward more independence with deeper thinking about the texts they are reading? Join us for a workshop in which we will discuss strategies for building independence and higher level thinking about the texts we are reading. We will explore basic inferring strategies as a foundation on which to build deeper interpretations. Interpretation strategies we explore will include ways to help students generate their own initial ideas about texts, then test out their ideas using text evidence, then revisit/rethink based on other possible viewpoints.
