Calling All Superheroes

Be a Superhero and Leap Into Summer Reading

The super villains have escaped and they are up to no good! The problem is that they have built a machine that measures how much children read and have figured out that children are spending less time reading. They are now stealing the superhero's superpowers and accessories and are locking them in reading vaults that can only be unlocked by reading minutes.

The superheroes need your help to get their superpowers back. By participating in the summer reading program, you can help unlock the vaults holding their powers. But be careful. The super villains have laid traps to keep you from reading, causing your reading level to slide downward this summer. You can help the superheroes get their powers back by reading 20 minutes or more each day and leap ahead in your reading ability by up to 40%.

Come to the Summer Reading Pep Rally and learn how to record your reading minutes and how you can participate in the other fun reading activities that have been designed.

The Superhero Summer Reading Pep Rally

How Does A Pep Rally Work

The Pep Rally is an opportunity for students and parents to learn all about our Summer Reading Program. It is a drop-in format so you can attend anytime between 3:15 - 7:00 pm. When you check in you will be given a bag with one puzzle piece inside. As you move from station to station, you will receive additional puzzle pieces. There will be student and adult cheerleaders available to help you accomplish each task. Once you have collected and assembled your puzzle, then you will receive some cotton candy to remind you how sweet reading is.

Students must be accompanied by an adult. All of the Pep Rally volunteers will be busy running stations for the participants.

Superhero Messages

You will be receiving Superhero messages using SMORE that will motivate and encourage children to read. Each message will include a challenge that when met will release the superhero's power and earn the child a badge. Come and learn where you can find the Superhero messages on the the website and how to see the badges that you earn.

Where and What Are Superheroes Reading?

Each week you will have the opportunity to fill out a Google Form where you can share your favorite reading spot of the week. You can even take your picture there and include a link to the picture on the form so others can see where you read. The best part is that you get to choose which Superhero you are reading for that week. Your completed form will be used to create a pin on a Google Map that will be shared on the library webpage. When you participate in the Pep Rally you will learn all the skills you need to participate in this fun activity. I can't wait to see where and what you are reading, plus which Superhero you are reading for.

How To Defeat Super Villains

The key to unlocking the reading vault and releasing the Superhero's power is to log your reading minutes on BiblioNasium. The super villains will try to distract you and keep you from reading but if you stay focused, read, and log your reading minutes on BiblioNasium then you will defeat them. At the Pep Rally you will learn how to get to BiblioNasium, login, record minutes, and attach your minutes to specific challenge.

Sidekick Training

Parents, our younger superheroes may need some assistance with their superhero duties. We will have a special station for sidekicks that will be filled with lots of resources to support your superhero. In fact, you will receive a Sidekick Help Sheet that will have QR codes that lead to screencast tutorials that will walk you through each step of the process. Every superhero has a support team. Come and learn how you can be a member of your child's support team at the Pep Rally.

Building Your Utility Belt

Have you noticed that Batman wears a utility belt? That is where he keeps his crime fighting tools, so he has them when he needs them. Reading Superheros need to fill their utility belts with booklists, books, and personal recommendations. Come to the BOGO bookfair during the week of May 23rd and add some great books to your personal library. You can learn more about the BOGO Bookfair at the Summer Reading Pep Rally.
