Idioms Took Over Trimmer Elementary Classrooms!
Last Friday, November 10th, Trimmer Elementary celebrated Idiom Day. Students learned that idioms are phrases that mean something different than what is actually said. They heard several examples on the news throughout the week, and then were tasked with creating their own idiom costume. This generated great discussions at school and at home. Their costumes were OUT OF THIS WORLD!
Can you match the idiom below to the correct picture above!
- London David and Lola Dorz are two SMARTY PANTS!
- Look at these TWO PEAS IN A POD! Aziah Hunter and Saveah Eaton can always be found together.
- Felix Sampell-Moreno would like to help, but his HANDS ARE TIED!
- Hailey Dejesus's PLATE IS FULL, but she always makes time for school spirit days, even when IT'S RAINING CATS AND DOGS.
- Jeneva Olp doesn't miss anything, because she's able to READ BETWEEN THE LINES!
- Amelia Soder, DJ Houser, Charlotte Lankford, and McKinley Cook are all kind kids. They would give a supportive comment to their acting friends by saying, "BREAK A LEG!"
- Julian Sastre knows it's always helpful to HAVE AN ACE UP YOUR SLEEVE!
- The look on Camden Lightner's face says it all. He certainly has a CHIP ON HIS SHOULDER!
- Grace Searcy and Ms. Eckbold are twins dressed like WHEN PIGS FLY!
- Cameron Batchelor is a LIAR LIAR PANTS ON FIRE.
- Josiah Acosta-Sexton is ON CLOUD 9 and really pulling off that tutu!
- Danae Martinez-Yanez, Laney McCloskey, Raelynn Latshaw, Elaina Steele, and Ms. Philbrook all had BUTTERFLIES IN THEIR STOMACH as they posed in front of the class for this picture.
- Kamora Thomas is always willing to LEND A HAND to someone in need.
- Check out IN A NUTSHELL, PANTS ON FIRE, APPLE OF MY EYE, AND FROG IN YOUR THROAT!
- One day, OUT OF THE BLUE, Tia Patel came up with this great costume!

YES! Comes to the Middle School
Our Middle School students recently participated in the Jr. Achievement YES! program. The YES! program is a half day program consisting of various activities intended to help students gain an appreciation for the importance that financial and career decisions will play in their lives as young adults.
Students were challenged to use pool noodles to transfer a single marble from one end of the classroom to the other without dropping the marble. The activity supported the concept of teamwork, an important skill when out in the workforce.
They enjoyed a STEM activity in using given products to produce a cantilever that reached 12 inches off the desk. They also worked through other STEM stations such as closing a circuit to mobilize a fan (Science), directing a mouse through a course using directions (Technology), building/replicating blocks from task cards (Engineering), and completing challenging math problems (Math).
Everyone enjoyed the Ladders to Success board game, similar to Chutes and Ladders, where the cards had questions about qualities of an entrepreneur.
The students had a lot of fun while learning several important concepts and career possibilities as they look toward their futures!
Thank you to the staff from Jr. Achievement and to all of the administrators, teachers, and AWESOME volunteers that made this experience possible!
Eager Readers Visit Country Meadows Retirement Community
Recently, students in Ms. Jennifer LaCour's first grade class as Wallace Elementary visited with the residents of Country Meadows Retirement Community and enjoyed reading with the residents.
Can You Taste The Rainbow?
Students in the College in the High School Basic Applied Statistics class began learning about inference tests by determining if they can "taste the rainbow" of Skittles.
Objects 'SPEAK' at the High School
It is that time of the semester again...on November 3rd, 9th grade students from Mr. Carlos Ferron, Ms. Mary Ann Sweitzer, and Ms. Maddie Myers' classes at the High School participated in the Speak Symbolism Gallery. For the past few weeks, these students have been working with one object to symbolize an emotion correlating to the main character in the novel Speak by Laurie Halse Anderson. Then, all classes came together to reflect on their work!
Hot Cider Hustle
A group of staff members completed the Hot Cider Hustle on Sunday, November 5. The Hot Cider Hustle is a 5K race on City Island in Harrisburg. All of the money raised went to the United Cerebral Palsy of Central Pennsylvania. The group includes Ms. Lisa Konopinski (MS), Ms.Jill Striebig (MS), Ms. Anne Maxwell (MS), Ms. Holly Holtzinger (TRM), Mr. Wayne Dull (MS), and Mr. Tim Rundle (MS). Love that Bulldog teamwork!
Asian Unit Comes to Life in World Cultures Classes
Ms. Yvette Ganoe and Ms. Emily Corcoran brought their World Culture classes at the High School to view some artifacts for their Asian unit that were brought in by Ms. Nicole Pham. They included three ao dais (two from her mother-in-law and one of her own), the traditional dress for women in Vietnam. Two traditional Vietnamese hats were available for students to view and try on. The students were also able to see a robe from China embroidered with dragons. From Japan, there was an antique tea cup and saucer; when the students looked through the cup, an image of a geisha could be seen at the bottom of the cup. Two Foo Dogs from China and a small 15th century Vietnamese vase from the Hoi An shipwreck were on display as well. Finally, the students got to view examples of Vietnamese embroidery, painting, and a series of ceramic dolls that represent the different ethnic groups within the country.
Learning Healthy Eating Habits Early!
Last week, Ms. Marianne Panopoulos (Wallace Cafeteria Manager) and Ms. Sue Zimmerman (Lincolnway Cafeteria Manager) presented a lesson about healthy eating and the importance of vegetables in Ms. Taylor Schlemmer's Kindergarten class at Wallace Elementary. The students listened to a story about vegetables, learned facts about vegetables, and made a craft! Thank you, Ms. Panopoulos and Ms. Zimmerman!
Video Production Collaboration
Third grade Lincolnway Leaders worked collaboratively with students from Mr. TJ Meese's Multimedia Video Production II class at the High School to write, film, and edit videos describing the behavior expectations at Lincolnway Elementary School. These videos will be shared with students who are new to Lincolnway in order to learn about the school. The high school students first traveled to Lincolnway to write and film the videos. Then, the third graders traveled to the high school to learn about the editing process. In addition to learning a lot from each other, both the high school and elementary students made some new friends!
