Christmas Term - Week 16 Mon 30th November - Fri 4th December

Language Arts

It's been a busy week in Grade 4.

The children have been excitedly preparing for our Exit Point in Language Arts this week. We are using our virtues of enthusiasm, cooperation, creativity and excellence as we prepare to entertain you. We are VERY excited. Some children are putting the final publishing touches on their poems and all of us are growing our confidence as we practice our performance skills. We can't wait to see you next Tuesday evening at 6 pm in the Grade 4 classrooms.

On Thursday Grade 4 and 5 students were treated to a unique theatre experience. Yes, the theatre came to us!

Artspot are a professional touring educational theatre company and they brought their production of 'Freya' to SJIIES. More information can be found here:

As evident on the children's faces, this was a joyous, exciting and entertaining experience for our children.

This week, the children have consolidated their knowledge, skills and understanding of angles in preparation of our end of unit review.

In particular this week, we have focused on telling direction in relation to the 8 point compass. This involved using lots of key vocabulary such as turning in clockwise and anti-clockwise directions. We have reinforced the knowledge that a quarter turn equals 90°, half turns equal 180°, three-quarter turns equal 270° and full turns equal 360°.

It has been great to see some geometric sets appearing in the classroom this week. The protractors were put to good use when drawing angles and we have practiced our excellence to ensure accuracy.

We will be sending home the end of unit review next week and would appreciate it if they could be signed and returned before the end of term.

After the break, we will resume with a study of perpendicular and parallel lines. If your child does not own a geometric set, including set squares, perhaps Santa could make this happen over the holiday break.

In our IPC learning this week we have been reflecting on the effect that our field trip to the SAM and NTUCCA have had on our learning.

The reflection was carried out in the form of a quiz prepared and delivered via an interactive app on our i-pads. Whilst all of the children were able to take part in the quiz at the same time, they entered their ideas, thoughts and opinions independently. Their teacher could then see their answers immediately and use this assessment to gauge current knowledge and guide future learning. A brilliant, fun and exciting way to reflect!

During theses reflections, we also came to the realisation that field trips are not just an enjoyable and a great opportunity to spend time out of school with our friends. They are also an extremely valuable and meaningful source from which we can acquire a unique range of knowledge, skills and even sometimes understanding.

By looking at contemporary art in a specific context and asking questions of the expert docents (guides) we were able to learn things that we would not have been able to from any other source.

The field trip really did help to embed two of our Key Learning Goals in this unit.

Next week, we end our unit with our Performance/Exit Point Evening on Tuesday.

Virtue of the Week

Thankfulness is being grateful for what you have.

It is an attitude of gratitude for learning, loving and being.

It is appreciating the little things which happen around you and within you every day.

It is having a sense of wonder about the beauty of this world.

It is being aware of the gifts in your life.
