Compassionate Directions (CODI) is opening 30-minute appointment slots throughout this week to see any community kids ages 3 to 18 who need assistance processing the earthquake. This is a free service, and the children do not need to be current CODI clients. Families can call CODI at 907-745-2634 to schedule an appointment. http://www.codialaska.org/about-codi/.

Students need the appropriate gear for the weather!
Students need:
- Winter Coats
- Winter gloves or mittens (not the thin cotton finger gloves)
- snow pants (even if there is no snow- helps with the cold temps)
- hat and/or face mask
- winter boots
Please send your students to school with the appropriate gear. We have a lot of students not dressing appropriately and we need your help. If students arrive to school in shorts and/or without a jacket we will be calling home and asking parents to bring the appropriate gear. Sweatshirts are not jackets.
Students are only allowed to stay in from recess if they come to school with a doctor's note stating the reason why they should not be going outside for recess.
Machetanz Needs
I am so proud of our staff, students, bus drivers, and parents. Our primary focus was on student safety and getting students reunified with their parents. We had all students out of the building and with parents by 10:45am.
As we debriefed as a staff we have identified some needs:
- All students need to have emergency contacts that can be called in the event we cannot get a hold of parents.
- Parents need to have plans for transportation should they not be able to come get their own child.
- Parents need to know the correct bus number students ride.
- We lost all forms of communication with the exception of our internal radios. We do not have radios for all teacher classrooms and should we have had a school full of students we would have needed to contact classrooms. The radios we use are $275 each and we would like to have one in each classroom. In order to make that happen we need to order 31 more radios. If you would like to make a donation or know of a business that would like to support this purchase please let us know. The total cost for the 31 radios comes to $8,525.
- We would also like to get 14 wool blankets and a tote to hold those blankets for each of our specialist classrooms so if students are in specials without their jackets we would have blankets they could go outside with to stay warm. We are currently working out the details of this cost but would appreciate any donations to go towards this as well.
Family Birding Club starting soon
Join Mrs. Kristich and Mrs. Hayes to explore the outdoors, learning about birds, and share bird sightings on eBird the world's largest birding community. We will typically meet the first Wednesday of the month. In the winter months, we will meet after school and in the spring we will meet before school. Sometimes we will meet at the school, and other times we meet at nearby trails. Come get more information at our first meeting!
Please take the survey below if you are interested in Birding Club.
Mat-Su Special Santa
If you are in need of assistance this year, please contact the school and we can send home an application for you and your family. You can also find them online at: http://www.specialsanta.net/ .
Our Angel tree is also set up in the front of the office. If you would like to purchase gifts for a particular child please select a tag off the tree. Once the gift/gifts are purchased please bring the items to the school unwrapped and we will assure that they get to the Special Santa Program.

We've got Eggs!
Our very own Machetanz hens are laying eggs! These eggs will be for sale by the dozen for $6. Please email Mrs. Klayum@ jillene.klayum@matsuk12.us to get on the list if you would like to purchase a dozen. Mrs. Klayum will contact you when your eggs are ready, and you will pick them up from her in room 127. Also, one dozen a month will be guaranteed to the person with the highest bid on the 15th of each month. Your bid should be emailed to Mrs. Klayum by noon on the 15th. All of the money earned from the eggs will be spent on food and bedding for the chickens as well as other supplies for our school habitats. Thank you!
Where's my bus?
Download the MSBSD app!
The app provided one location for calendar of events, a directory to find any staff member in the district, notifications of school closures, easy access to iparent and much more. If you have several students in multiple schools you can have all school events on one calendar. It's so convenient!
