What's Happening at Norris?
We "kicked" off the school year with some engaging activities for learners and staff including an all school kickball game. Learners also had an opportunity to meet the new staff members to our team.
This week learners are encouraged to participate in our Week of Service (WOS). Our September WOS event is Random Acts of Kindness. All week learners will earn a Random Act of Kindness tokens from a staff member when demonstrating an act. Participation in WOS events earn learners' credit towards their elective credits.

ELA: The learners in ELA have been exploring their interests as they choose books, articles, and short stories for independent reading. They are learning about themselves by completing a reading survey and brainstorming topics they want to know more about. Learners are also responding to the daily journal topic by answering with a complete sentence. Learners are doing most of their writing in their personalized notebooks that they designed. In the upcoming weeks, learners will be analyzing texts and identifying the central idea and supporting details. Additionally, the learners will be writing narrative texts of their own and sharing with each other in lab. Learners are off to a great start in ELA.
Mathematics: We're busy picking up where the learners left off and reviewing things they may have forgotten. We're starting to get things organized in folders so learners know exactly what to do and we started the year with a lively game of Taco, Cat, Goat, Cheese, Pizza.
Social Studies: Learners have already begun to answer their first historical inquiry question this week: what counts as 'history'? Some learners have spent time in Ancient Greece learning from the Oracle of Delphi what it means to 'know thyself,' while others have chosen ambitiously to tackle complicated geopolitical questions about terrorism and its origins. Lookin' forward to a rad year.
Science: Ryan and Ashley are very excited to begin working with learners in Science Labs this academic year. Science Learners in Biology, Chemistry, and Earth/Space Science have been very busy working on classroom norms, safety procedures, and getting to know each other as we begin the first term. Stay tuned for future updates about all of the exciting things going on in Science Labs at Norris Academy.

K-8 Labs
ELA: In the K-8 ELA labs, the learners have been investigating some of the books by the creative and imaginative author and illustrator, Crockett Johnson. The learners connected to the books by reading, listening, sharing ideas, doing word searches, and building castles with legos. The labs have been a great beginning of making connections with each other during these first days of school.
Math: The K-8 learners engaged in many math related activities including playing math bingo, math card games and math jeopardy. Learners also started to familiarize themselves with Math Prodigy by setting up their login and exploring the site.
Science/Social Studies: Learners in K8 PBL will be learning social studies and science through a project based approach this year! Our first project was a social studies project about self awareness. Learners created ink prints with images of things that make an impression on them in their life.

Norris Academy Virtual School (NAVS)
Welcome to NAVS! We are very excited to get the new school year started. First and foremost, if you have not completed the Learner Questionnaire and Home Coach Questionnaire PLEASE do so at your earliest convenience.
We have undergone quite a bit of changes in NAVS over the summer. Staff, content, and procedures are all changing. Here are a couple of highlights of things that you can look forward to in the fall.
Cory, our Social Studies specialist and NAVS liaison has left, and we want to wish him all the best in his future endeavors. We are excited to announce that long time Norris veteran Robert Kuprenas will be joining our team!
Robb Jackson and Amber Ehrmann will be returning to continue their work with our virtual learners. Robb is excited to focus on Math and Science instruction and Amber will continue working with a revamped orientation process, Personal Career Readiness (PCR), and electives.
We are also excited to announce that this year we will be building more connections between our main campus and our virtual learners, from clubs and enrichment to utilizing the technology we have to build and foster positive relationships; great things are ahead!
