Leading the Pack in 5th Grade!
Week: August 29- September 2, 2016
Welcome to 5th grade
Students are beginning to fall into a routine with teachers, students, and classroom expectations. We are already establishing flexible grouping that allows students to be successful right at their level. Our goal is to help each student grow as an individual both academically and socially. This is a huge growing year for your student. We want it to be one they will always remember with fond memories. Thank you for partnering alongside us in this journey to educate your child.
Project Based Learning (PBL)- Success in the workforce
Setting up a purpose for learning
Collaboration- Creating success criterion
This week in 5th Grade .....
Homework can now be completed online in Canvas under Virtual Library. We will show students how to navigate the online homework. The window will open at 10:00 a.m. on the day it is assigned and close at 10:00 a.m. on the day it is due. However, Friday homework will be available all weekend. Students have been instructed that they must score 80% or higher on the homework or they need to correct all problems on a paper-pencil copy. The goal is to master the material, not complete homework for a grade. Homework is used as a practice tool for the daily lesson. If a student needs a paper-pencil copy, it can also be found online to print from Canvas.
Reading- We are focusing on connections to self this week. Each class is working on an individual class book to establish reading norms. Our goal is to start reading groups next week. During our Making Meaning time, students are reading the book Everybody Cooks Rice. Students received the assignment to bring a copy of a family favorite rice recipe. We will be making a 5th grade rice cookbook. This continues our connections to self with this book.
Science- We are focusing on simple machines. This will culminate with a trip later in the fall to the Gray Campbell Farmstead to look at settler life and simple machines.
Spelling- New words are assigned on Monday. Students will have Tic-Tac-Toe activities throughout the week. The test will be on Friday.
Writing- Students are finishing their letter to their oldest living relative. They are beginning a new focus on personal narratives.
PBL- We are continuing our project on success in the workforce. Students need to have their 10 questions answered by Tuesday at class time.
