CDS Phoenix Rising
Cheongna Dalton High School's Weekly Newsletter
February 23rd, 2020
From The Assistant Director
Dear CDS Community,
I was incredibly proud and inspired by the efforts our students put forth last week to show our appreciation to the CDS building staff. Senior Camryn Kim (pictured to the right) organized an entire week dedicated to showing our gratitude to those at our school who work quietly behind the scenes and rarely get recognized. Students created thank-you notes and videos in House which we watched together with the staff in Dalton Hall on Friday. It was a really uplifting event that will leave a lasting positive mark on our community. I can’t thank Camryn enough for focusing her senior project on such a worthy area.
This week was the third annual Psychology Fair run this year by senior Jerome Lee! Students presented their research to judges over a period of two days, and winners will be announced this coming Wednesday. I was impressed by one group of students, led by Nicole Shin (Class of 2022), who focused on the effectiveness of Dalton’s language policies. We also held our first competitive sports matches since the basketball season was canceled in late January due to the coronavirus. The soccer teams are set to start their regular season this week as they will take on ICSP and Dulwich. We continue to monitor the coronavirus and are taking every precaution to ensure that our community is safe.
This week is a busy one as, we will be holding quite a few events! On Wednesday, the Math department will host CEMC, their annual mathematics competition. On Friday, we will host a parent information session about helping our students develop positive study habits. We’ll explore the newest research-based best practices which can be utilized to assist students in performing optimally. Hope to see a lot of parents there! On Saturday, we will hold the annual Dalton Business Competition (DBC) which has generally been one of the best student-led events of the year!
As we head into the end of the term, it is important to monitor your stress levels and make sure you are doing all you can to space out your work. Utilize the time you have during the school day to ensure you are getting enough sleep at night. Set timely goals for getting your work done so that you stay focused and on task. My mother always used to tell me: “If you have three hours to get your work done, it will take three hours. But, if you give yourself an hour it will take an hour.” Your teachers are here to help, so reach out when you need it!
That is all for now! Have a great weekend!
All the best,
Jason Musselman
Assistant High School Director

Creating an Audio E-Book: An Authentic way to Learn a Foreign Language!
HS Beginner Spanish students have been introduced to reflexive verbs during Term #3. Students have learned the new vocabulary the first week after the break. For the past few weeks they practiced forming sentences with the help of games in class. They practiced listening and speaking as well and they started creating their online audio book this week. Next week they will be recording their voice in each page. Top 5 students will enter the Spanish Creative Competition that is going to be held on the 20th of this month. Great job all of CDS HS Beginner students, as you have shown great deal of perseverance since it is one of the hardest topics of year 1 and it is evident that all of you did superb. ¡Felicitaciones!

Polar Coordinates
Precalculus students are learning a new type of coordinate system and ways to graph polar equations. Students are creating a race track for an amusement park based on the polar equations they have learned in class based on the different curves the equations make. This allows students to use their creativity along with the content in the class to design and present a model business plan to showcase their math and professional presentation skills. Students are excited to share their designs and unique racetracks.

Exploring Civilizations
This week in World History I class students have been actively engaged in research projects regarding various historical civilizations, including investigating the culture, rise, and fall of various kingdoms and empires. Here we see Suyeon Lee, Hyunwook Lee, Seung June Kwon, and Myungkyun Kim researching the historical roots of Korea as they examine the Goguryeo Kingdom. In high school, we are happy to see the skills learned during SDL learning in middle school put to good use. I am sure their peers in class will learn a great deal from this presentation next week.

CDS Phoenix Soccer Season Kicks Off
High School Girls Soccer
Hello CDS Football Fans,
Our last match was a home match on the CDS pitch against Seoul International School (SIS) with a result of a hard fought 0-5 against the former Cup Champion. This year the Lady Phoenix are looking to build on the skills they have developed for the past few years. The game was played well with notable efforts from our goalie to deflect several on target shots on goal. Our defence is in a new formation did a great job of keeping SIS confined to mostly the midfield. Midfield and Forward did an amazing job pushing the ball forward as we took several runs at goal. All in all it was a great team effort. With a young team lead by the three senior Captains we feel this year will be a great year. We are Stronger Together. Thank you for all of your support and we can’t wait to see you at the next match.
High School Boys Soccer-1
The boys had been waiting all year to get back on the pitch after a devastating exit in the cup tournament just 10 months ago. Graduating 7 starting players meant that this team would need to come together to essentially build a new identity against a worthy opponent from the KIAIC Red Division, Seoul International School (SIS).
The teams took the field and the whistle blew. It was the first time in three years since CDS started a match with two Freshmen. Siyoon Kim and Taehun Kim received their first career starts lining up at cental midfield and left back respectively.
Five minutes into the match the SIS keeper had trouble clearing the ball which was swiftly picked up by junior captain Tylor Park. Park collected the ball 25 yards out, and quickly directed the ball back towards the goal and into the side netting for Dalton’s first goal of the season. Park would play spectacularly in this one according to Coach Musselman he was “all over the field. We sure needed his stamina, energy and game IQ today.”
For the next twenty five minutes both sides struggled to find any chemistry. Passing was off, poor challenges resulted in free kicks, and neither side could finish in the final third.
Tylor Park changed all that with a minute remaining in the first half. On a straight hustle play Tylor intercepted a pass across the SIS back line and played it to senior Kevin Cho. Cho took a touch and burried it into the back of the net. The goal moved him into 13th all time for goals scored in a Phoenix uniform.
The second half came and went much like the first. Junior captain Caleb Park picked up a yellow card on a tackle from behind. Midway through the half SIS was awarded a penalty which was strongly saved by junior goalkeeper Soonwon Hwang. Moments later he made yet another spectacular diving save, pushing the ball up and over the crossbar and earning the seasons first clean sheet. The new defense put him in a number of bad positions throughout the day, but he was solid and unmovable.
Seungjoon Huh received man of the match after coming off the bench and providing a spark that was desperately needed. The central midfield needs to work out the kinks if they hope to compete with cross town rivals Chadwick on Friday.
A win is a win. Thank goodness that soccer is finally back!

Upcoming High School Events
Dear CDS,
This is the KAISC Executive Team.
The Korean-American Interscholastic Substance Committee (KAISC), a significant event that CDS will be hosting, which will discuss the issue of substance abuse such as smoking, alcoholism, and drug use. This conference will be expecting future KAISC representatives from all KAIAC schools to attend. It is expected that KAIAC will hold and support KAISC as an annual event between the international schools within the system. From this event, our school will be acting as the “headquarters” of all the substance abuse cessation centers around the nation, and the directors within the KAIAC registered schools are hoping that KAISC will maintain such avocation around the international school community.
To make this event successful, the executive committee requires about 15 staff members that will help run the conference smoothly. This is an excellent opportunity for all students as it is an event on the national scale that hopes to influence the whole international school community. Event is planned to be on 4/11 with an estimated volunteer hour of 15 hours, so please fill out the form if interested.
Currently the staff applications have been sent to emails, so please check out information posted up on the email. If you have any questions, please contact Jina Min (11), Collin Park (12), or Sungjun Jeong (12) via e-mail or kakao.
Thank you, and we hope to hear from all of you.
