Counselor's Corner
College GO week takes place each September in Indiana schools. This year the dates were Sept. 21st-25th. College will be here before you know it! It is important for students to start thinking about their future educational and career plans early. Setting goals, exploring their interests, and researching their options are great ways to ensure success.
This month the counselors visited students in their classrooms to talk about many important topics, one of which was planning for their academic futures. Your child was given the Learn More magazine, which is provided from the Indiana Department of Education. This is a great resource for parents and students to use when starting to think about life after high school. For more information regarding College GO week, the 529 College Savings Account, or to explore career interests, please visit http://www.in.gov/collegegoweek/.

******* Important FCI Procedures for 2015-16 *******
IMPORTANT SAFETY NOTE!! --- Pick-up/Drop-offs
ALL exchanges for which you need to park will require you to accompany your child into the office to drop-off and sign in OR pick-up your child from the office and sign out. While this may add a few extra minutes to the exchange, the safety of all is our utmost concern.
In addition, if you arrive early to drop-off students and decide to park in the lot until drop-off begins, you MUST get in the line to drop your child off at the front and not cut through and jump to the front of the line. Do NOT cut to the front of the line. Given that on any given day we have hundreds of students dropped off, it is imperative that everyone follows the procedures. Safety of all is imperative. Thank you in advance.
Texting/Emailing during school day NOT allowed
In an effort to keep instructional time as free from distraction as possible, do not email or text your child during the school day. Please contact the office should you need to get a message to your child.
Students will be reminded of the following:
- Absolutely NO texting/personal emailing during the school day (7:25 a.m.-2:45 p.m.) to students OR parents via any type of program/app/etc. Consequences will be given should this occur. [Students staying for after school events may utilize such technology after school.]
- Notifications on iPad should be turned off during the school day.
- If students receive texts/emails during the school day, they should immediately notify their teacher or staff member.
- We realize there may need to be communication between students working collaboratively during the school day. However, it should only be done at teacher direction/approval.
- Texting/emailing that does occur outside of school is a parental approval issue. However, if content of texting/emailing outside of school negatively impacts/affects the school environment, there may be consequences that are imposed at school.
Remember...if you need to get a message to your child during the school day, please call the office at 915-4220. All other situations should be resolved outside the school day.
Transportation Change/Early Dismissal Notification
Please include the following in your note and/or message:
- child's full name
- homeroom teacher
- time of early dismissal
- nature of dismissal (e.g., doctor appointment, physical therapy, etc.)
- your full name
- contact telephone # in the event of questions
If an absence is due to doctor's appointment, remember to send the doctor's excuse note to school for attendance purposes. Medical absences are recorded differently according to our state/district attendance policies.
Background Checks
If you are planning to volunteer/participate in events during the upcoming year, you must have a background check on file. Background checks remain active for three years. Additionally, all volunteers are required by law to complete the HSE Anti-Bullying training webinar. Background check information and anti-bullying training may be accessed at: http://www.hse.k12.in.us/ADM/parents/volunteering.aspx.
Note that most background checks take a minimum of 3 days to run. If you are unsure of your background check status, you may inquire by emailing FCI front office staff at FCI-general@hse.k12.in.us.

Box Top Collecting
We are excited for our Box Tops and Labels program to get underway for the 2015-16 school year!
Box Tops for Education is a program where our school can earn money from the products you are already using at home! There are two ways for you to earn Box Tops for our school.
1. Clip – Clip Box Tops coupons from hundreds of participating products.
2. Shop - Visit www.boxtops4education.com and automatically earn eBoxTops when you shop through the Marketplace under the EARN tab! Over 175 retailers give eBoxTops to FCI when you shop online!
When you visit, opt to receive the newsletter. That way Box Tops can send you emails full of helpful information and coupons to save on Box Tops products!
Through The Labels for Education program, you can collect UPCs and beverage caps from participating products to earn points that can be redeemed for FREE educational merchandise! To see a complete list of participating products and point values, please visit www.labelsforeducation.com
Your child will receive a prize for every 25 Box Tops/Labels/caps submitted with a maximum of 10 certificates earned per submission. Prize coupons are from local supporters such as , Wendy’s, Dairy Queen, Paradise, Orange Leaf and more! Send your labels in at anytime, in any quantity. We keep track of how many your child has submitted! To submit your Box Tops and Labels, follow these simple directions:
• COMPLETELY CUT OUT all Box Tops and Labels for Education UPCs. Make sure to check the expiration date – expired Box Tops cannot be included as they do not earn the school any points! 51% of the UPCs have to be included to earn points.
• Place all labels in an envelope or baggie with your child’s FULL NAME, HOMEROOM, and GRADE clearly printed.
• Put the envelope/baggie in the collection box found through the school.
Total number of Box Tops and Labels by HOMEROOM ONLY will also be tracked. A class party such as pizza or ice cream will be held for the classrooms turning in the most labels per semester. Check the Falcon Flyer for information and updates throughout the year!
Thank You and start clipping, Lisa Chaney and Beth Penny.
