A MINUTE WITH DR. MAXWELL
Dear East family,
Our number one priority is to keep your children safe; therefore we are always working on ways to continuously improve.
Each school year we review our emergency drills at least three times. The emergency drills that we practice are; fire, earthquake, tornado, and intruder. We participated in the Great Central U.S. Shake Out on October 18th at 10:18 AM and plan to partake in a State-wide Tornado Drill in early spring. Both of these are in addition to the other scheduled drills. With these drills, our students and staff are well informed on the procedures to follow in emergency situations.
Our teachers and staff members have received training on intruder response. We work with our local authorities on simulated response situations specific to our building as well. Role playing scenarios offer hands on, valuable learning experiences.
Response to a major emergency is also included in safety plans for teachers and staff. We will practice procedures in early spring. This will allow our safety teams (first aid, search and rescue, assembly area, site safety, extended care, and command) to experience procedures and will teach students how to assemble in such an event.
If you have any questions regarding safety procedures, please feel free to call or visit with me any time.
Enjoy your November!

Mrs. Criddle's Corner
During the month of November, we celebrate American Education Week. We would like to show our teachers how much they are appreciated by allowing the students to write any teacher or staff member a Positive Office Referral. Several of our students have received these from our teachers, but we thought this would be a fun way to switch it up. If your child would like to fill one of these out and submit it to the office, we’ll be sure to deliver them to the teachers. Here is the form. There will also be copies in the office.
Mrs. Moyers' Message
Mark you calendars! On Thursday, November 8, from 5:30 pm - 7:00 pm, there will be a Family Information Session in the library at East Elementary. Our topic will be bullying, and I will be sharing the definition of bullying that we use here at East Elementary, our approach to addressing bullying behavior, and strategies to be used at home to help students prevent, respond, and/or report bullying behavior. From there, the floor will be open to you, the parents, to bring up any questions, concerns, and suggestions you have so that we can all work together to help our students regarding this topic.
Bullying is a complex topic that affects students both at school and at home, so I feel that it is important that we work together to be on the same page regarding what bullying is (and is not) and how to help our students know how to handle situations if/when they arise.
Even if you can only come for a little bit, I hope to see you on November 8!
Artsonia
The holiday season is quickly approaching and what better gift than an item with your child's artwork on it! Artsonia has lots of great gift ideas (mugs, stationary, ornaments, jewelry- just to name a few) all that can be customized with your child's artwork on it. Better yet whatever money you spend on these awesome gifts, our school will get 15% back from it to be used in our art room. Check out the website and all of your child's artwork by logging on to Artsonia.com or by clicking the link when you get updates, when I post a new piece of art. Thank you for your support and have a joyful holiday season!

News From The Nurses
Staying Healthy!!
It is very important to remind your child/children to wash their hands frequently and cough into their elbows. Make sure your child/children are getting plenty of sleep and staying hydrated with water (don’t forget to wash your child’s water bottle daily with hot water and soap if they are using one from home). Please remember to keep your child home until they are 24 hours free of vomiting, diarrhea, and/or fever (for fever they need to be 24 hours free of fever without the use of medication like tylenol/motrin). Thank you for your attention to this matter!!! We want everyone to stay healthy (we don't want to spread the sickness)!!!!!

TALK TO YOUR CHILD
One way that children learn language is by hearing it over and over. Your child will listen to you talk and use you as a model.
Parallel Talk = talking about what your child is doing as it happens. Describe your child’s actions, feelings, and playthings (ex. “You’re excited because we’re going to the park”).
Self-Talk = telling your child about what you are doing, seeing, or feeling at the time you are doing it. Self-talk will show your child by example how to put words together. (ex. “Wet clothes. Hang them up.” or “I’m washing the car. It sure is dirty. Let’s start with the roof.”).
Labeling = name objects, actions, and feelings. Give your child new words for your surroundings and activities to help build vocabulary. (ex. “Look, ball. Ball bounce, bounce. It’s fun.”).
