Reading Round Up

As we finish up the calendar year, we continue to study the Dickens story A Christmas Carol. We are using this opportunity to reflect on our own lives, and what areas we have for improvement.

One are in which we all could use a little improvement (myself included!) is making time to read every day. Please encourage your student to choose a novel, read a magazine, or help you with the directions for a project.

We completed our assessment over myths and drama on Tuesday. Students scoring below 70% are working on test corrections. When we come back from break, we will move on to expository text.

Writing Notes

This week the students worked on their myths. The students have created very imaginative stories. After the students finished their final draft, thry drew a picture of their constellation to go along with their story.

Next week the students will write a creative fictional story. We will read Snowflake Bentley by Jacqueline Briggs Martin. After, the students will brainstorm snowflake story ideas. The students will write about a day in the life of a snowflake. They will need to think about where they would like their snowflake to be. It could be on a sled, on a snowman, on a frozen lake, etc. This will be a fun quick write!

Math in a Minute

We have started working on multiplying whole numbers and fractions and will move on to dividing with unit fractions and whole numbers after the break. Students who turned in math homework last week were given a homework pass for next week. The others will get their homework on Monday and have it due on Wednesday. Thank you for all of your continued home support. I hope everyone has a relaxing holiday with family and friends.

Mathletics is a great website for math tutorials and extra practice. Students should have their username and password glued into the front of their math notebook.

From the Science Lab

We are currently working on Formation of Fossil Fuels. Our lab today included an activity on layering sediments to simulate coal formation.

The Forces and Motion Experiment Assignment will be due on Friday, December 4th. Have a great weekend!

Social Studies

We will have our final Social Studies assessment on Monday over the Declaration of Independence and the Revolutionary War. This will be an open book assessment. We discussed the importance of knowing the material, even though they will have access to the text. Students can access the review materials on Canvas. The following link will take you to a Kahoot review.
