HPHP Update

August's Hiking for Heartbeats Recap

How did Hiking for Heartbeats go the first Saturday of August?

What began as a foggy and cool August morning at Crissy Field blossomed into a sunny and energetic day at Mori Point. The HPHP Rangers had another successful Healthy Parks Healthy People first Saturday program with a total of 36 participants!

This month changed our HPHP history as we ventured to the GOGA Southlands, Mori Point so participants could get to know another gem of the local national parks. Nearly everyone participating had never been to Mori Point before. We had diverse group of participants coming from Sunnyvale, San Jose, San Francisco's Presidio, Mission, and Excelsior Districts to name a few.

A new feature this month was free transportation offered to participants who had difficulty getting to Mori Point on their own. A PresidiGo shuttle was chartered to meet hikers at the Crissy Field Center, who were greeted by Ranger Fatima. This shuttle was reserved for folks to have a central meeting location which they can get themselves to by car or the city's public transportation and to have a consistent meeting place month to month- a need which was discussed in our HPHP meetings. Since the HPHP programs take place in different sites in the GGNRA, the shuttle meets participants at the central location- the Crissy Field Center- then heads out to the program sites. Since it was our first time getting a PresidiGo shuttle for HPHP, we only managed three riders; we tried our best to spread the word! Additional to the PresidiGo shuttle, another chartered bus from Harris' Tours was provided to an entire group of families from a partner organization, Good Samaritan, which picked up our 18 happy hikers at their community center. These shuttles were a huge help to getting new audiences to the park who are now excited to return.

The sun came out then Mori Point's Hiking for Heartbeats program split into two separate hikes after stretches and a special introduction to the area and its endangered wildlife. The low impact hikers stayed close to shore with Ranger Fatima and Jennifer for a stroll along the Mori Promenade while the mid-high impact hikers made their way up to the sweeping 360 degree views atop Mori Point with Rangers Mariajose and Alejandra. Though separate, the participants all had a fabulous time being healthy at Mori Point and hearing about its colorful history.

The program ended in high spirits after closing stretches all together on the boardwalk followed by the popular HPHP healthy snacks of fruit infused water, apple slices, natural peanut butter and string cheese. Soon enough our Healthy People made the trek to the only porta-potty in the area before loading onto the bus once again to head back home and Mori Point's wild sounds grew louder than our laughs .
