Marian Central Catholic High School Faculty Newsletter
March 10, 2019
Well, our Third Quarter Exams are completed and grade meetings are about half complete! Unfortunately, it seems that the flu bug has bit Marian and there were a handful of students who were absent either one or both days. Because these are quarter exams, and many are not cumulative, we are anticipating that teachers will be making arrangements directly with their students in order to make up the exams (unless a student has an ISP that requires the student to take their exam in an alternate location with Mr. Taylor).
Please remember... the parent grade portals will reopen on Friday, March 15, which will mean that teachers will then be locked out of making any updates to grades. Please follow these simple instructions when dealing with make ups:
- Grade changes between March 11 and March 14: Teacher can make changes in the gradebook themselves, but MUST also drop an email to Ms. Novy indicating the change
- Grade changes from March 15 on: Teacher must provide details on the Grade Change Form and submit to Ms. Novy
Tuesday's Late Start seemed like no other to date. With Administration's commitment to focusing on the culture of Marian Central, it was imperative that we begin the process of renewal. We have placed the butcher paper charts in the faculty lounge for all to review and continue to process. Don't forget to fill out the plus/delta/prescription sheets you received in your baggies and return them to the designated bin in the faculty workroom so all voices are heard. With the development of norms that all agree on, our next Late Start Meeting in April will allow us to have real conversations about what is wonderful and works at Marian and what might need changing. We really are growing From the Inside Out!
We are so thankful for Father Twenty for leading our school into Lent this past Ash Wednesday. His message about conversion will surely help students and Staffulty alike as we all decide how we are going to approach our personal journey through Lent. Father also posed a simple challenge of trying to attend one Daily Mass per week... sharing the following intention schedule...
Monday: Freshmen
Tuesday: Sophomores
Wednesday: Juniors
Thursday: Seniors
Friday: Marian Staffulty
Catholic Online also provides us with the idea that there are three main goals of Lent: change, conversion, and new beginning. I am certain that we are on the road to a new beginning...
It was a wonderful week...
Looking ahead...
Is it polo season already? Our weather, up to this point, certainly is not convincing us that spring is on the way! Maybe God knows that we're transitioning to polos this coming week though, because the forecast for next week is in the 40's to 50's... and even to 60 degrees! Please remember a couple of basic expectations that we have to hold our students to with regards to this change in dress code...
- Students have the option of either a short or long-sleeved Marian polo
- Students may wear a solid-colored, long-sleeved shirt under their polo, if they choose... for warmth
- Polos and undershirts are to remain tucked into their pants
- Students still have the ability to wear either the full or quarter-zip Marian fleece jacket over their polo... for warmth
- (Whether we like it or not) Students are able to wear uniform shorts instead of uniform pants. The shorts should have the Marian "MC" at the bottom of the shorts, not at the hip like the pants.
- Please also be aware of some students getting laxed on their shoes. More specifically, there have been many girls wearing clogs/crocks. These are not allowed because they are not of solid construction, covering both toe and heel, so could be dangerous.
Please continue to follow through holding our students accountable for following Marian dress code policies at all times. If all staff members are consistently holding our students accountable for all school rules, students will be less apt to try to break these rules... we need to all work together!
Monday is a noon dismissal. Marian will be providing lunch for Staffulty between 12-12:30 pm in the cafeteria, afterwhich we will be having an inservice focused on technology from 12:30 - 3:00 pm. An agenda will be provided later Sunday/early Monday.
This week is Foreign Language Week! Even more exciting is that we have current and past students presenting almost every day. (Note: speakers will be excused from classes on their presentation day.) If you have a chance, please take time during your prep period to listen to our presenters in the auditorium! Other events include:
- Daily trivia on announcements
- A special daily menu in the cafeteria related to the day's theme
- Spanish Honor Society Inductions Wednesday at 6pm
Another highlight of this week: Marian SMART Club is presenting information on the dangers of vaping to all Freshmen PE/Health classes. We all know that vaping is becoming an epidemic with young people today, so if our students receive this important message early and often, maybe our school can make a dent in eliminating the glamour related to this horrible habit! Please click on the list in the weekly schedule at the bottom of this newsletter to find out which students will be conducting this presentation and be out of classes on Monday.
Spring Sports are in full force, and with this coming week predicted as having some mild weather it would be great for our players to see Marian Staffulty out cheering them on! From Track & Field to Boys LaCrosse, Girls Soccer to Boys Tennis, and Baseball to Softball, there's plenty of action to go around! Check out the athletic calendar here for times and locations!
Finally, it's time for spring cleaning! Time to clean out your garage and see if you have any gently used bicycles for the NHS Bicycle Drive! NHS is collecting bicycles (preferably adult sized) this coming Saturday, March 16 from 9am -12pm in front of the entrance to Harding Field. NHS is working in conjunction with Catholic Charities as they provide immigrants and refugees with a place to live, connections to jobs, and transportation... thus the bicycles. Please consider helping NHS as they accept both gently used and new bicycles for this good cause.
Have a wonderful week...
