Dear John Wetten Families,
With the month of May already at our doorstep, we are gearing up for a strong finish to an unusual school year. I continually am amazed at the resiliency of our John Wetten Leopards! They have adapted to Distance Learning and now Hybrid Learning, and continue to be excited about their learning and connecting with classmates and staff. I am grateful to work at John Wetten with such an amazing group of students and staff who have risen to the challenges that this year has brought us. Thank you for all you have done to help ensure that our students continue to learn and grow.
I've always had fond memories of school yearbooks and book fairs and we are pleased to be offering both this year! The book fair will be virtual, please see more detailed information below. We're also putting together a yearbook for this memorable school year. If your students missed picture week, and you would like their photo in the yearbook, you will need to submit a photo to us by May 7th. Please see more detailed information below.
Additionally, we are thrilled to be offering a Summer Experience program this summer! The district has sent out information about pre-registering for this free, 4 day per week program that runs from the middle of July to the beginning of August. Please see more information below.
In other important news, the state assessments this year for 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade students will only be administered to students whose parents request testing. If you would like to have your 3rd, 4th or 5th grade student tested in English Language Arts, Math, and/or Science, please see more detailed information below and fill out the form.
As always, thank you for helping to create a community that supports all of our students. By working together, we can ensure that John Wetten Leopards will continue to reach new heights in their education.
Sincerely,
Michael Clutter

Scholastic Book Fair, May 10-20
The Scholastic Book Fair is back!
Stop by our JWE online Scholastic shopping site to purchase a new book in your favorite series, or try a new author!
The Spring book fair will be different from the Fall - you will still shop for books online, however, when you place your order, the order will be filled with books that have been delivered to our school. This is exciting for 2 reasons:
You will get your books quicker
You will not pay to ship the books
Shopping details - go to: https://www.scholastic.com/bf/johnwettenelemschool or scan the qr code to get all the details.
You can pay for your books using ewallet or write a check and send it with your students teacher (no cash). Ewallet is like a gift card so you will want to know which books you are purchasing before you purchase the ewallet. For more information see the JWE Library/Makerspace website: go to parent information video.
Remember, every dollar you spend will benefit our school directly.
We can’t wait to “see” you at the Fair! Kim Burke burkek@gladstone.k12.or.us

COVID-19 Testing in Schools
To further mitigate the risk of COVID-19 transmission in Oregon’s K-12 schools, the Oregon Health Authority (OHA) is supporting COVID-19 testing in public school offering partial or full in-person instruction for students and staff who display symptoms of COVID-19 or who have been exposed to COVID-19 in the school setting. This program is intended to test students and school staff only if their symptoms have been identified while at school. The district will be providing staff and students who are COVID-19 symptomatic, or who are determined to have been exposed to someone with COVID-19 rapid testing.
Test Kit
The district will be using the Abbott BinaxNOW point-of-care antigen test. The Abbot BinaxNOW test is most accurate when an individual is tested in the early stages of infection, when the amount of virus in the respiratory tract is generally highest. Specimens must be collected by the person being tested, under observation by the school testing administrator. The Abbott BinaxNOW test is not intended to be used to screen asymptomatic individuals or those without a known exposure to COVID-19.
Privacy
Student test results, both positive and negative, shall be kept confidential. Student test results may be shared with the student and their legal guardian only. However, student test results will be reported to public health, as required under ORS 433.004 and ORS 433.008. As outlined in the Ready Schools, Safe Learners guidance, schools must train staff on confidentiality requirements under FERPA, HIPAA, and local policy regarding student and staff health information, including a COVID-19 diagnosis.
Reporting requirements
Logging tests:
- Results of each test must be promptly logged in the Abbott BinaxNOW Testing Log.
- Testing logs must be kept in a secure location and may be audited by OHA.
- Daily reporting of all positive and negative results must be made to the Oregon Health Authority.
- All positive cases should be reported immediately to the local public health authority.
Consent forms
To be tested at school, students must have written consent on file prior to an identified need for COVID-19 testing. Here is a link to the COVID 19 Testing Consent Form for the parent/guardian to complete and return to the school. You may send the signed consent form to school with your student and the teacher will collect it, or you may drop off the consent form at the JWE front office between 8am - 12pm.
