Meet Torrey Stricklin-Morrison
Hello, I am Torrey Stricklin-Morrison and I work at Howe Middle School and the Howe Community Library. I am in a unique situation, where the community library is combined with the school.
This is my 2nd year here and I wear many hats. I am the middle school librarian, the community librarian, the library director, and the district librarian.
I am the solo librarian in our district, like many others in our region.
How long have you been a librarian? While I have only been in the library for 2 years this is my 19th year in education. Prior to this I was a technology specialist in Clark County School District in Las Vegas. I spent a significant amount of time collaborating with our campus librarian, which helped me develop a deeper love for the library!
What is the best part about working in a library? The best part about my job is getting to interact with the students daily and building those relationships. It makes me smile when the students talk about the fun they have in the library!
What things have you done as a library media specialist that you are most proud of?
I am most proud of the programming that I have put together for our school and community. Table tastings are one of my favorite activities that we do in the library. There is nothing like being the first one to preview a book. It is always interesting when they share their mini review of the book. I also host a middle school book club and a Dungeons and Dragons group. This summer I had a group of girls come and shadow me in my job to learn about businesses run by women. That was an empowering experience for all of us. I truly have the best job!
What are you currently reading? I just finished reading “If He Had Been with Me.” I could not put this book down. If you like a little romance and some mystery, this is a must read.
I would love to highlight great things that are happening in your district libraries. Please send stories and pictures of your outstanding programs to angela.ellis@region10.org.
