The Scholastic Book Fair is Coming November 20th - 22nd
Dear Parents and Families,
Reading for pleasure unlocks the power of information and imagination and helps children discover who they are. Here’s what you can do to help children develop stronger reading skills and a love for reading:
· Set the example. Let children see you read.
· Have a collection of books in your home. Update this collection routinely to keep up with changing tastes and reading skills.
· Support our school’s Book Fair. Allow your children to choose their own books to read.
Our Scholastic Book Fair is a reading event that brings the books kids want to read right into our school. It’s a wonderful selection of engaging and affordable books for every reading level.
Please make plans to visit our Book Fair and be involved in shaping your child’s reading habits.
Family Event: November 15 (Friday) from 3pm till 5pm. Come check out the Book Fair in the Library and enjoy some hot cocoa in the Kindness Garden located next to the Library. “All for Books” donations are welcome. “All for Books” donations will be used to buy books directly from the Book Fair for our Library.
November 18 – 22 (Monday-Friday): the Book Fair will be open every day during Parent/Teacher conference week from 1pm till 4pm Come get books for holiday giving! Books are a perfect gift for your children, family members and our teachers. Check a “Teacher Wish List” section at the Book Fair.
Additionally, students can preview and shop the Book Fair during their scheduled library time.
Two NEW shopping options! Book Fair eWallet is a safe and convenient digital payment option for your student to shop the Fair cash-free. If you’re not able to attend the Fair, try our new online shopping. What's Happening in the Music Room
Music Newsletter
November / December 2019
What’s happening in the Music Room? Our patriotic song of the month is America (My Country Tis of Thee), by Samuel Francis Smith, and our composer of the month is Vince Guaraldi (1928-1976 ). This jazz pianist is best known for his music for the Peanuts specials, such as A Charlie Brown Christmas.
1st Grade: Our students are focusing on holiday songs, such as A Pumpkin Ran Away and Five Fat Turkeys. They are also going to be working on songs for their holiday performance in December. At the same time, they have been introduced to more percussion instruments and are growing in their listening skills.
2nd Grade: The second graders are continuing to build rhythm and pitch skills. They are working on a lot of holiday songs, including A Turkey Named Bert, as well as songs for their December performance.
3rd Grade: The third graders will be focusing on movement and instruments for Lil Liza Jane and holiday songs. As they gear up to start recorders in January, they will be spending more time learning to read the notes of the treble staff as well.
4th Grade: Our fourth graders did some beautiful part- singing and instrument work with Ghost of John in October, and they will continue this work with O Christmas Tree in November and December.
5th Grade: The 5th graders have learned many chords at this point and have been doing a great job with their ukuleles! Please join us for the Winter Concert on Tuesday, December 3rd. The Choir and 5th graders are performing, and the 5th graders will lead a sing-a-long portion on their ukuleles. The concert will be during the school day at 1:30, and also at 6:00 that evening in the Coppin Cafeteria.

Parking & Drop Off
Please note that parking is at a premium, particularly now that we have so many new families who joined us this fall. If you are arriving early and waiting with your child in your car, please consider parking along the street to ensure our staff can find parking when they arrive.
Entering Campus
If you are walking your child onto campus and plan to go past the big, black gate, you must sign in at the front office and obtain a visitor badge to be on campus. Remember to sign out when you leave as well. This helps us to account for everyone that is on campus.
Food Service News
We've gotten lots of feedback from students and families regarding some changes in food services. Here is some info from our Food Service Director Christina Lawson:
A. WPUSD has started offering chocolate milk on Fridays only. Our Food Service department is really focused on bringing in lots of fruits and vegetables this year and reducing down the occurrence of items with added sugar.
B. Want to help shape the future of WPUSD food service offerings? We are looking for teachers, parents, community members that are interested in being on some panels/focus groups regarding food service selections and branding over the next year. Please reach out to Christina Lawson at clawson@wpusd.org if interested.
C. We are lucky to be able to feature lots of CA grown produce that is seasonal and fresh. All our offerings are all CA Grown at the moment including our carrots, lettuce, plums, peaches, oranges, zucchini, strawberries to name a few!
