For the Week of April 21st-25th
What We Will Be Learning About This Week....
Week of April 21st
Math: Students will be exploring geometry for the next two weeks! This fun unit starts off with the exploration of what makes a shape a polygon and continues into 2-D and 3-D classification. Students will be using tools in the room and online to learn about quadrilaterals, curves, angles, and other attributes of 2-D shapes. We’ll create tangrams, robots, and loads new schema!
Reading: This week students will continue their study of Tall Tales. Students will read books about a variety of characters, from Mike Fink to Pecos Bill and Calamity Jane. Students will complete character maps to explore exaggerated character traits. Later in the week, students will have the opportunity to write a tall tale about themselves!
Writing: We are “Zooming in” on writing this week with our focus on Small Moment Writing (personal narratives). Students will learn to take a small moment from a special day or event, and stretch it out to write a vibrant, detailed story.
Science: This week students will continue to measure, record, and graph weather information, including temperature, wind conditions, precipitation, and cloud coverage, in order to identify patterns in the data. In addition, we will be learning about the water cycle. We will be learning that the water cycle is connected to weather conditions and begins when the sun’s heat evaporates water. We will learn that clouds are formed when water vapor cools which causes it to condense. Finally, we will learn that water will fall back to Earth as rain, snow or other forms of precipitation.
Word Study: We will resume word study this week. Students did not receive their new sorts during the week of benchmarks as was expected.
