Own ideas about Formative and Summative Assessments

Formative Assessments

  • monitor student learning to provide ONGOING feedback

  • helps students identify their strengths and weaknesses and targeted work areas

  • low stakes

Summative Assessments

  • evaluate student learning at the end of a unit

  • high stakes

I think all assessments should be formative. Why should an educator wait till the end to see that the students are not grasping the skills being taught? Allow students to grow daily and expect high expectations from all, regardless of what you have been told. All students can learn; however, it is up to you, the educator, to find out how they learn best and address their needs to ensure learning is purposeful.

Effective Classroom

Ensure that exit tickets are used, multiple participation questions, multiple response strategies, feedback that is positive and area of improvement, use checklists that help students who know the material work with others, while those who are semi confused the teacher can work with. Also, be sure to implement the C3B4ME. Therefore, students can work with others getting that social emotional activity and cooperative activity and if it cannot be figured out, go to the teacher.
