The Urgency of Academic Language
Vocabulary Instruction and much more for Grades 3 to 8
In order for students to master new vocabulary, the words need to be usable, transferable, and personal. Students need to have repeated exposure and opportunities to read, write, listen to, and speak new words. How do teachers choose the appropriate words for vocabulary instruction? Plus, how does vocabulary instruction fit into an already packed schedule?
Join Julie Monetta at the Southern Indiana Education Center to explore solutions to these dilemmas. Julie will also share methods that are not only kid- and teacher-friendly, but will also help vocabulary "stick." Participants should expect the following:
A better understanding of specific vocabulary words to focus on with a class
Ideas of how to help students learn how to master new vocabulary words
Suggestions on how to differentiate and meet specific needs within a class, including high ability students, English Language Learners, and those with IEPs
