From The Principal's Desk
Tēnā koutou katoa,
Welcome back! After the long summer break, it's great to see so many happy, enthusiastic children (and families) back with us, full of energy and ready to learn as ever.
As you will no doubt be aware, however, this term also brings home the fact that we start the school year still coming to terms with the loss of one of our own as, sadly, Alex reached the end of his brave battle with illness during the holidays.
For those of you who did not know him, I think will be best remembered for his infectious smile and laugh, his seemingly-inexhaustible and mischievous sense of humour, and for a personality that never failed to light up the room. There really are no words other than to say that we have lost a much-loved and cherished member of our community.
As a major fan of comic-book superheroes, Alex was a stoic reminder to us all that in reality a hero does not have to be the biggest, the fastest or the strongest, but that it is measured in the strength of an individual's character, something that he showed with remarkable fortitude throughout his illness.
For those who knew him, you may be interested to know that we are currently discussing the possibility of establishing a memorial on the school grounds in consultation with his family, which we hope will be an opportunity at some point in the weeks ahead to help mark the special place he has at TPS. We will share more information on this when we have it. Alex's family have also asked me to pass on their sincere thanks for the support that they have received from the school community during such a difficult journey.
Looking ahead to the new school year, I look forward to sharing happier news, new developments and the many successes that no doubt lie ahead. I particularly want to extend a warm welcome to new students, families and also members of staff Brent Beaumont and Librarian Susan Wallace who join us this Term. I am sure that you will join me in helping them to settle in to our learning community.
I'd also like to add my thanks to all of the staff who have been hard at work planning and preparing for the new school year, and also to the fantastic stationery team, led by Paul and Suzanne, for once again organising such a huge task for the whole school (even giving up valuable holiday time to do so!).
Other than that, welcome to Term 1 once again, and here's to an outstanding year of learning ahead!
