Levels of the Federal Court System
District Court: Lowest level
•Where all cases begin.
•Used to determine guilt or innocence.
Appeals Court: middle level
•Where cases are reviewed.
•Used to determine if the previous trial was fair or unfair.
Supreme Court: Highest level
•Where cases are reviewed again.
•Used to determine if the previous verdict was constitutional.
Types of Jurisdiction
Original Jurisdiction
•The authority to hear the case for the first time.
Appellate Jurisdiction
•The authority to hear a case appealed from a lower court.
