Cedar Grove Friday Flash
April 22, 2022
Dear Cedar Grove Families,
We hope you and your family had a wonderful spring break, and we were so happy to welcome the children back for the final quarter of this school year!
We are very excited to report on our composting program for the month of March (see image below). Students were able to divert a record 990 pounds of food from landfills and incinerators, the highest amount collected since the inception of the program last fall. Congratulations to all of our students for their efforts in making this such a success!
Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) Drinking Water Testing Program retests the water at each school every three years, and testing has been completed at Cedar Grove. Our test results indicated that one or more drinking water outlets contained lead concentrations at or above the Montgomery County Council and Maryland Action Level of 5 parts per billion (ppb). Please click the link below to view the report. It is important for our families to know that the water outlets that failed the inspection have not been used for drinking for many years. Students have access and obtain water only from safe, hallway fountains/bottle fillers or water brought from home.

As a reminder to parents of students in grades 3, 4, and 5, students will be taking the Maryland Comprehensive Assessment Program (MCAP) assessments in English Language Arts this Monday and Tuesday, April 25 and 26. Please make sure your child has a good night's sleep, a healthy breakfast, and arrives on time for school.
On Wednesday, April 27 at 3:00 p.m., all students will be viewing a series of four videos concerning emergency preparedness. We complete several drills each year including fire drills, lockdown and shelter drills, severe weather and earthquake drills, and evacuation and reverse evacuation drills. These videos are great reminders of our procedures and how to respond in these situations to stay safe.
Take Your Child to Work Day is on Thursday, April 28. If you plan to have your child miss part or all of the school day, please email Mrs. Fair, attendance secretary or submit the online absence reporting form and indicate the reason for absence is Take Your Child to Work day in your comments. This will ensure that your child's absence is excused.
As mentioned earlier this month in the Flash, Cedar Grove and Wilson Wims ES will be partnering once again to host summer school this summer. The program will take place July 6-29 and will be tailored for students with the greatest need of mitigating learning disruption. The curriculum is designed to support students who need additional or repeated instruction in the major work of the previous grade level and/or are currently below-grade level in reading or math. Parents of students recommended for summer school will be contacted via email to receive registration information.
As the weather is finally warming up, we will soon be converting from heating to air conditioning. This annual changeover will take place over the next few weeks. During this time, there may be days when neither service is available. In addition, students will be going outside regularly for recess, PE, and curriculum-based activities. Please check the forecast daily and send your child to school dressed for the weather.
Have a wonderful weekend!

Kindergarten Registration is Open!
Kindergarten registration open last Friday, March 28. If you have a student who will be five years of age by September 1, 2022, please visit the MCPS kindergarten registration webpage for directions on how to enroll your child. We are also including the Kindergarten Handbook link, which contains quite a bit of information about the kindergarten program, vaccine requirements, and more. There will be a Virtual Meet and Greet for incoming Cedar Grove kindergarten families on May 16, from 7:00 to 8:00 p.m. Zoom information will be shared with families soon. All of this information is included on our school website, Kindergarten Registration Materials | Cedar Grove ES - Montgomery County Public Schools. Please share this information with any neighbors or families that may also need to register their child for kindergarten.
