Kinder Corner
"All I really need to know, I learned in kindergarten!"
This Month in Kindergarten...
Welcome Back! We hope our students and families enjoyed Winter Break! January is an exciting month in Kindergarten! In Language Arts, we are reading winter books by Jan Brett. We will practice using various comprehension strategies such as inferencing and sequencing. In Word Work, we are continuing to practice the "Phonics Dance" to master our letters and sounds as well as learning "hunks and chunks" or parts of words (digraphs, endings, and word families). In Writing Workshop, we are using 4-square graphic organizers to organize our writing as we recall key details from informational text and write about animals. In Math, we are continuing to practice combining quantities with various counting games. In Science, we will study the season of winter as well as animals and their adaptations. In Social Studies, we will study Martin Luther King, Jr. and learn about his contributions and impact.
Skating FUN!
Starting this week, we will be learning to rollerskate in P.E.! This is an exciting activity our students always look forward to! PLEASE be sure you have returned your child's permission form so they can participate! Permission forms were sent home before Winter Break. If we have not received your child's permission form, we will send a new one home!
Happy New Year!
The new year is a great opportunity for a fresh start! We wanted to share these important reminders to help our students and families start the new year off right!
- Breakfast-If your child needs to eat breakfast at school, please make sure they arrive at 7:15am so they have time to eat before we begin instruction at 7:45am.
- Take-Home Folders-Please be sure to check your child's folder each night and send it back to school each day.
- Winter Coats-We will continue going outside for recess if the "feels like" temperature is above freezing. Please send your child's winter coat and any other winter gear (hats, gloves, scarves, etc.) to school each day.
Sight Word Homework
In kindergarten, we don't have "homework," but we do ask that you practice sight words and read with your child each night! Your child's teacher will assign a list of sight words to your child based on their individual needs. The words will either be sent home in their take-home folder or shared in their Google Classroom. Please practice the sight words at home each night with your child. Your child needs to be able to read them "in a snap" and write/spell them correctly. We will assess your child's progress each Friday beginning next Friday, October 21st. As they master reading and writing each list, this assignment will be updated with a new list of words.
Specials Schedule
Here are our Special Area Rotations! Please make sure your child brings their library book back to school on the days they have Library and wears tennis shoes on the days they have P.E.
