TO GIVE IS TO RECEIVE
FOCUS SCHOOL VALUE FOR 2023: RESPECT
Our community values an attitude of caring deeply about people and treating them with dignity. We care about ourselves and the world around us. Respect is evident when:
• we treat others as we want to be treated
• we express feelings in a peaceful way
• we speak courteously to everyone
• we bring honour to ourselves, our families and our school
• we recognise the achievements of each person
• we build positive relationships
• we show equal justice and fairness
Holy Thursday Prayer
Glory and praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ, for sharing yourself with your apostles at the Last Supper and for giving your love to us at this meal. Give us grateful hearts for the life you poured out for us, for the suffering that takes our sin away. Glory and praise to you, Lord, both now and forever.
From the Principal
Dear Parents and Carers,
Today is Holy Thursday, the commencement of the three-day celebration of the Lord's death and resurrection. It begins on Holy Thursday with the evening Mass of the Lord's Supper, reaches its high point in the Easter vigil, and closes with evening prayer on Easter Sunday. (Roman Calendar, no. 19). Easter is the most important holiday on the Christian calendar.
Stations of the Cross
This week, class groups went on a journey praying the Stations of the Cross. Some groups prayed with their buddy classes. The mosaic stations of the cross throughout the school assists our children in reflecting on the journey that Jesus took.
Easter Reflection
The Year 5 students led the whole school Easter Reflection today. This was a moving experience, with the students showing reverence and respect as the re-enactment of the Easter story was shared. Thank-you to the students and staff for the preparation of the reflection and for the parents that attended to pray with us as a community. The symbolism of Jesus washing his disciples' feet shared the message of serving others as Jesus did. This message is resonated in our school motto "To Give is to Receive." Please discuss the Easter story with your children and highlight the importance of this special time. Here is a link to an Easter story from a child’s perspective. https://youtu.be/C6J1WQnBTfM
Make-a-Move Concert
The Make-a-Move Concerts this week were an incredible success. Students demonstrated their learning in the Creative Arts, whilst displaying our school values of Generosity, Respect and Excellence - in the way they confidently worked together; were inclusive of differences and aspired to do their best. Many thanks to Mrs Gismondi, our Make-a-Move Teacher; Lynda Packer for coordinating the program and the parents and staff of Orana for their time and support.
Holidays
As we approach the holidays, it a good time to plan for some quality family time, which includes some down time. Time to just ‘be’ is linked to positive mental health and relaxing our overloaded brains can have a significant impact on our wellbeing. I will be planning some family downtime these holidays and encourage you to do the same. One of my favourite holiday activities is to read a good book. Reading to children and modelling a love of reading by reading yourself can positively impact children’s literacy achievement. Reading improves vocabulary, comprehension whilst broadening life experiences. I look forward to discussing with the students' highlights of what books they read or listened to on our return to school.
Term 2 Information
The Term Two Planner is now available on the website. https://www.orana.wa.edu.au/calendar/ This is a forward planning document and at times, updates are made. Please regularly check the newsletter and the Events Calendar on the website for the most up-to-date information.
Kindy enrolment interviews for 2024 will commence early in Term Two. If you have a child who is due to begin Kindy in 2024 or 2025, please ensure your application has been received by the school office so that you do not miss out.
ANZAC Day
Today is the last day of Term 1. ANZAC Day will also be celebrated over the holidays. ANZAC Day, 25 April, is one of Australia’s most important national occasions. ANZAC Day is a National Day of Remembrance in Australia and New Zealand that broadly commemorates all Australians and New Zealanders "who served and died in all wars, conflicts, and peacekeeping operations" and "the contribution and suffering of all those who have served". We will hold an ANZAC Day Service on Wednesday 26th April at 11am, in the hall. Please join us.
Next Term at the Francis House Mass, we will be acknowledging the significant contribution Lyn Perrigo made to our school. Please join us for Mass and morning tea on Friday 28th April at 9.30am in the hall.
I wish you all a happy Easter and a relaxing and safe holiday.
Best wishes and God bless.

Year Four Stations of the Cross - Church of Saints John and Paul
Our Year 4 students contributed to the Parish Stations of the Cross on the 31st of March. Our students led this prayer by acting out each station. This coincided with the parish Lenten Retreat. Feedback from parishioners was positive with many parishioners approaching the class teachers to share their appreciation.
Project Compassion
Thank you to everyone who generously donated to Project Compassion. Orana raised over $1000, which will be sent to Caritas to assist those in need in Australia and around the world. Congratulations to the 4B class who raised the most money – an amazing $220!
Please Support Breast Cancer Care WA
Erin Blight, one of our parents, is taking a huge jump out of a plane, later on this year in June to help support Breast Cancer Care WA. Here is the link if people wish to donate for this remarkable cause and her bravery!

SOCIAL WORKER NEWS
Enjoying Time with Your Child
Now that school, teachers and friends are a big part of your child’s world, it can be hard to find time to enjoy being together. But fun activities and special times help build family relationships, which are still the biggest influence on your child’s development.
Why enjoying time together is important
When you and your child enjoy special time together, you can learn to see the work from your child’s point of view. It’s a chance to find out more about your child’s likes and dislikes, her worries and her frustrations.
Spending time together is also a way of giving your child your full attention, sending the message that he’s the most important thing to you.
Kind Regards
Kath Warburton
