UOI 1: How the world Works
An inquiry into the natural world and its laws; the interaction between the natural world (physical and biological) and human societies; how humans use their understanding of scientific principles; the impact of scientific and technological advances on society and on the environment.

UOI Field Trip
What Are We Learning This Unit?
- During this Unit of Inquiry we will be starting Module 8. In Module 8, the final module of the year, students extend their understanding of part–whole relationships through the lens of geometry. As students compose and decompose shapes, they begin to develop an understanding of unit fractions as equal parts of a whole.
- Identify a shape’s defining attributes to recognize and draw categories of polygons
- They describe a shape in terms of its attributes, counting the number of edges, faces, and corners
- Combine shapes and build composite shapes
- Use a set of shapes to create a new shape.
- Build and partition shapes by combining two or more smaller shapes and relating the parts to the whole.
- Interpreting equal shares of a whole as a fraction
- Name the equal parts halves, thirds, or fourths
- Work with telling time and identifying patterns on a clock.
English Language Arts
In English Language Arts, students will be exploring many different concepts this unit, we will be exploring:
- The overall structure of a story, including describing how the beginning introduces the story and the ending concludes the action.
- The main topic of a text as well as the focus of specific paragraphs within the text.
- The meaning of words and phrases in a text.
- How specific images (e.g., a diagram showing how a machine works) contribute to and clarify a text.
- How reasons support specific points the author makes in a text.
- How to use context to confirm or self-correct word recognition and understanding, rereading as necessary.
- A variety of digital tools to produce and publish writing, including in collaboration with peers.
- A shared research and writing projects (recording science research and observations).
- How to work with others in a shared group project using our social skills and problem solving while intentionally implementing the Learner Profile Attributes
- Adjectives and adverbs, and choosing between them depending on what is to be modified.
- Shades of meaning among closely related verbs (e.g.,, thin, slender, skinny, scrawny).
Students will be exploring the human life cycle. Students will learn to use simple past, present, and future tense. Students will learn vocabulary related to different stages of the human life cycle such as baby, toddler, adolescent, adult, and old. Students will also learn related to occupations. Lastly, student will learn to use incomplete verbs ( (كان واخواتها in the past, and future tense.

Science & Social Studies
Our class is beginning a scientific study of insects and plants. We will be caring for and investigating several different insects, and growing a plant from seed, to find out about their lives. Some of the insects that will be visiting our class undergo complete metamorphosis, as in the classic case of the butterfly—egg to caterpillar to chrysalis to butterfly. Other insects reach maturity by growing through a less dramatic sequence of stages in a process known as simple metamorphosis. The plant we will grow will go through its full life cycle—seed to plant to flower to seed—in just one month. Your child may demonstrate a heightened interest in insects and plants over the next several weeks. One goal of our work with insects is to help the children develop a deeper appreciation for the diversity of life and to cultivate a sense of respect for all living things that Allah has created. If your child wants to catch an insect in a jar, please invite your child’s insect friend into your home for a short time, and encourage him or her to return the insect to the wild after a short captivity.
In Social Studies students are:
- Exploring different types of regions around the world (desert, rainforest, woodlands,) and identifying these areas on a globe or map using map features to help us find these areas.
- We will also be exploring Maryland local insects that are found right here in our area including the Tiger beetle, Blue Dasher Dragonfly, Buckeye Butterfly, and the Mason Bee. All of which can be found right here in our region.
· Read and memorize Surat Al-Balad with fluency and Tajweed.
· Review from Surat Ash-Shams to Surat An-Nas with fluency and Tajweed.
· Know the general meaning of Surat Al-Balad.
· Write this Surah after the memorization.
· The rules of the close Ta’a (Ta’a Marbotah).
Students will learn:
· Aqeedah: Angels and what they do? (differences and similarities between the angels and humans).
· Fiqh: Fasting. What is it like? what is the purpose of fasting? How we do it in the correct way?.
· Akhlaq: How you choose your friend? What is the beauty? Observing the good qualities of friends. Memorize one of these Hadith (مثل الجليس الصالح والجليس السوء كحامل المسك ونافخ الكير) or (المرء على دين خليله فلينظر أحدكم من يخالل).
- Students will explore the connection between Art and insects’ forms and anatomy.
- Students will sculpt different insects from Maryland using air dry clay.
- Students with experiment with acrylics paint/ color theory.
- Students will continue their yarn weaving.

- 3.0 Creative Expression and Production: Students will demonstrate the ability to organize knowledge and ideas for expression in the production of art.
- 2.0 Investigate a variety of ways that artists develop ideas and organize the elements of art in response to what they see, know, and feel
