Celebrating Hispanic Heritage at Horizon Science Academy of Lorain

We had an absolute blast on October 12th, 2023, celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month in style!
Our dynamic senior duo, Gabriella C. and Mileena R., took the stage as our emcees, and they had us all hooked for a night of culture, music, and togetherness. They really brought the energy!
The real stars of the night, though, were the band Mambo Alto. With strong connections to Horizon Science Academy Lorain, they set the evening on fire with their Latin rhythms. Alex Martinez on the Guiro, Jazlynn Martinez on the Piano, and Hiram Martinez Jr. on the congas got us all moving. Hiram Martinez Sr. even brought his saxophone and vocal talents to make the night even more special.
Our very own students also poured their hearts into the celebration with poems read aloud in Spanish that moved all of us. Their creativity and appreciation for Hispanic culture were simply inspiring.
Mrs. Collins, our awesome Principal, welcomed our guests and highlighted the importance of Hispanic Heritage Month. Her son, Jonah Collins-Paraprofessional, translated her speech in Spanish, emphasizing our commitment to understanding and communication across cultures.
Our elementary students got in on the action too, showcasing their artistic talents with projects inspired by famous Hispanic artists. Their art added a burst of color to the event.
And what's a celebration without good food? We savored a delicious dinner and wrapped up the night with some joyful dancing. It was the perfect way to end the evening!
At Horizon Science Academy of Lorain, we are all about celebrating diversity and embracing the rich heritage of the Hispanic community. A big thank you to everyone who joined us in this fantastic celebration.
5th Graders Embark on a Historical Journey at Hale Farm
Our 5th-grade students recently embarked on an educational adventure that transported them back in time! The destination? Hale Farm in Bath, Ohio, and it was a trip to remember.
Accompanied by Mrs. Clayton, Miss Sinclair, Mr. Rose, Mrs. Cooper, Ms. Jimenez (a wonderful parent volunteer), and, of course, our enthusiastic guide, our students delved into the rich history of entrepreneurship, innovation, and daily life in days gone by.
The trip began with a visit to a working dairy farm, where our students got a firsthand look at how people in the past earned a living through dairy farming. They learned about the meticulous process of cheese-making and how this artisanal craft was transformed into a source of income. The interactive experience allowed our young historians to step into the shoes of people from that era, seeing how they worked and thrived.
The Goldstein house, a piece of history itself, held captivating stories about one woman's clever way of managing her inherited house and land. Facing the challenge of upkeep, she made the strategic decision to sell some of her land and rent out rooms to travelers. This creative solution ensured she could make ends meet, demonstrating the innovative spirit that we discussed in our Standards.
During the visit, our students also had the chance to witness various crafts of the time, including glass blowing and clay making.
In connection with our curriculum, this field trip tied directly into the their current social studies lessons which emphasizes the significance of productive resources (entrepreneurship, human resources, capital goods, and natural resources) in promoting specialization and trade.
We are delighted to provide our students with these enriching experiences that not only bring history to life but also align with their educational journey.

A Fashion Show with a Twist: Debra Rapoport Inspires Horizon Art Students
We've got something super cool to share – our students recently rocked the runway with a unique fashion show featuring hats that are not only stylish but also sustainable. And guess what? It was all inspired by the one and only Debra Rapoport!
So, who's Debra Rapoport, you ask? Well, she's been a style icon since the '60s, a sustainability champ, and an all-around art influencer. Her secret sauce? The ABCs – assemble, build, and construct. Our students took this philosophy to heart and turned it into something amazing.
For three whole weeks, they let their creative juices flow, using materials Mrs. Nagy had collected from all over the place. The result? A collection of super sustainable hats that would make Mother Earth proud.
But here's the best part: it wasn't just a show for the big kids. We also invited the younger elementary students to join the fun and get a sneak peek at the coolest hat trends of the season.
A huge shoutout to our students for their awesome work, Mrs. Nagy for being the resource queen, and Debra Rapoport for sparking that creative fire in our students. This fashion show was all about fun, creativity, and keeping it green.
