Hawk Highlights
December 15, 2023
Decatur Middle School Families,
Last week, our students were very busy at DCHS Auditorium! On Tuesday, Ms. Swingle and choir students performed a concert. On Wednesday, Ms. Campbell/Mr. Storey and band students performed a concert. And Thursday night, Ms. Andry/Ms. Shipley/Ms. Swingle and theater club students performed a collection of 20+ songs. I'm sorry I couldn't make it to the choir concert (Board Meeting that night), but I hear the students were excellent. I absolutely enjoyed the band concert and the theater performances! Thank you parents and community for being so supportive of our students!
The Parent/Teacher Organization and Student Council coat and warm winter gear drive was quite the success! Coats and gear have already been distributed to many families. If you would like more information regarding the PTO, please reach out to Tammy Popp at TammyPopp@gmail.com.
Speaking of jackets... There are a TON of jackets, sweatshirts, etc. in our Lost and Found located in the Cafeteria. Have your student check here if they have lost a piece of warm clothing. Items left at the end of the week will be donated. See picture below.
No extended day or clubs during the week of December 18-21.
Four school days until Winter Break! Students' last day is December 21 in which grade levels will participate in a convocation recognizing perfect attendance, honor roll, positive behavior/citizenship, sports, etc. Then, Small Learning Communities will participate/compete in a collection of Reindeer Games! This should be a super fantastic fun-filled day!
I hope everyone enjoys the weekend and...

Cell Phones and School Technology
Please help us to remind students that cell phones and earbuds are not appropriate to be used in class UNLESS specific permission has been given by a teacher. If students are found to be inappropriately using cell phones, they will be confiscated until the end of the period. Continued inappropriate use may result in the cell phone be confiscated until the end of the day. Parents will be contacted if this occurs.
Also, a quick reminder to please monitor usage of social media and texting apps. The internet is a powerful place and can be very mean and dark for our students. In fact, many of our issues at school arise because of inappropriate messages being sent outside of school hours that then impact our students during the day. Yes, issues that are clearly created outside of school hours are often brought into the building requiring administration and counselor involvement. If your student is subject to inappropriate messages, or mean messages, please have them take a screen shot of that message and show their SLC Director or School Counselor. We will attempt to work through the problem with the students.
Students should not have social media apps on school issued iPads. If you see apps on their device, they have found a way to bypass our security.
Finally, the safest place for cell phones is the students locker. Cell phones that are lost or stolen will be reported, but it is very difficult to investigate as we can not reasonably search all students. Students are ultimately responsible for their own cell phone.
