Anti-bullying at TAPCo
The first step to stop bullying behavior is to identify it and intercede quickly to protect and restore the victim. While discipline is a necessary aspect of bullying prevention, students who are identified as bullying others will be provided counseling to change their damaging behavior.
From the DOE’s Respect for All website page “Sometimes children bully to fit in. Your child can benefit from participating in positive activities. Involvement in sports and clubs can enable him/her to take leadership roles and make friends without feeling the need to bully. Other times kids act out because something else—issues at home, abuse, stress—is going on in their lives. They also may have been bullied. These kids may be in need of additional support, such as mental health services.”
As part of our ongoing work with improving and supporting the mental health of our students, we are doing or have completed the following:
- Alpha Day, a full day of anti-bullying and other collaborative strategies is happening on 12/23.
- Wheelchairs Against Gun Violence were at TAPCo for three hours on 11/23 educating our students about the negative effects of bullying, gangs, and violence.
- We had seven separate grade level meetings with students at the beginning of the school year led by Dean John Sandrowicz.
- We are becoming a community school July 1st 2023, which, in part, comes with 5 to 6 licensed social workers.
TAPCo is known for its family atmosphere- this is the result of your hard work. Together, we demonstrate the love and commitment we have for our students. The celebration of healthy, positive behaviors will continue. Equally important- the acknowledgement and support of those students who change to become positive members of our school community.
Reporting Student-to-Student Discrimination, Intimidation, and Harassment, Including Sexual Harassment and/or Bullying
Under DOE policy, students may not harass, intimidate, bully or sexually harass other students. Students may also not discriminate against or harass, intimidate or bully students on the basis of actual or perceived race, color, citizenship/immigration status, religion, creed, national origin, disability, ethnicity, gender, gender identity, gender expression, sexual orientation, or weight.
There are four ways to report this type of behavior:
- Immediately notify a staff member in TAPCo's Office of Student Support- 718-584-0832 extension 5371 or 5370 or your child's teacher.
- Notify TAPCo's Respect for All Liaison Ms. Danielle Fenderson or Sexual Harassment Prevention Liaison Ms. Erica Carr.
