Director's Corner

Dear families,

It has been an exciting month at NWSOIL with lots of fun activities and wonderful achievements as highlighted in this newsletter. One big achievement I wanted to share with you is the implementation of new core curriculum for reading and math. Here is some initial information about the curricula:

Achieve 3000 Math - A Differentiated Learning Solution for Math

Achieve3000 Math™ is a digital mathematics solution for grades 3-12 that’s designed to develop math fluency and accelerate students’ mastery of skills across grades, standards, and topics. Ideal for any type of learning environment, this highly engaging, fully customized learning tool covers a comprehensive scope of standards-aligned math content—from basic fluency and numeracy to core high school topics.

Achieve3000 Math’s individualized practice was designed to mimic a one-on-one tutoring session with step-by-step scaffolding and layers of support. When students get an incorrect answer, they are gently led through a productive struggle process to the correct answer. The prerequisite knowledge needed is broken down into easy-to-understand pieces. Helpful hints, videos, and feedback lead students to the correct answer and a complete understanding of the concept.

Achieve 3000 Literacy - A Differentiated Learning Solution for Reading and Writing

Achieve3000® is a supplemental online literacy program designed for use by students in elementary school through high school grades. Through leveled, non-fiction and fiction content tailored to individual student ability levels Achieve3000® focuses on building phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, reading comprehension, vocabulary, and writing skills. The program provides content for students across a range of ability levels, including typically developing readers, struggling readers, and English language learners. Content is adapted to an individual student’s skill level following an initial ability assessment and is updated according to subsequent progress monitoring assessments. The online dashboard provides usage and progress monitoring data to teachers and students to track student progress with building the targeted skills.

World Kindness day!

World Kindness Day is November 13! At NWSOIL-Olympia, kindness is one of our skills encouraged and instilled through our PBIS (Positive Behavioral Intervention and Supports) program. Kindness is an interpersonal skill that can be taught by showing empathy and demonstrating active listening with others. Students earn points when they practice kindness with peers and staff. The best way to teach kindness, is to lead by example. As children see us choosing kindness, they will be more likely to show kindness as well.
