Environment as Self: Creative Arts & Ecopsychology in Central Park
Executive Conference Center - 1601 Broadway (depart from 8th floor lounge)
Corinna Brown, BC-DMT, LCAT
James Hillman wrote, “the ‘Bad’ place I am ‘in’ may refer not only to a depressed mood or an anxious state of mind; it may refer to a sealed-up office tower where I work, a set-apart suburban subdivision where I sleep, the jammed freeway where I commute between the two.” This experiential workshop will provide participants with antidotes for this type of everyday “psychic numbing” and disconnection that many of us experience in hectic urban environments. Together we will walk to Central Park and take time to connect to the earth and nature through artmaking, dancing, and creative writing outdoors in the park. The session will end with a processing of our experiences, a discussion about creative arts therapies applications of ecopsychology, and a closing ritual that we will co-create.
2:30 pm - 5:30 pm
Greening the Lifecycle: Ecopsychology and Aging
Executive Conference Center - 1601 Broadway (enter on 48th Street)
Madeline Rugh, PhD, ATR-BC
We embrace youth, physical beauty, and vigor, turning away from the natural signs of human aging, yet we are not put off by images of age in nature. In this three-hour workshop, we will explore our attitudes regarding the experience and meaning of aging through the realms of art and ecopsychology. Participants will experience an examination of ecological principles and issues and their relationship to attitudes and images of aging; a slide lecture on the role of art, creativity, and images of nature in the experience of aging; and experiential exercises in connecting with the natural world and one’s own life cycle utilizing various expressive modalities including visual art and creative writing. Time for dialogue and discussion will be provided, including how to incorporate this work into clinical practice.
SUNDAY
10:00 am - 1:00 pm
Environmental Art Therapy: Transforming Inner & Outer Landscapes
Executive Conference Center - 1601 Broadway
(depart from 8th floor lounge to Central Park)
Jean Davis, MPS, ATR-BC, LCAT
As Environmental Art Therapists, our work is directed inwardly as well as being outward-bound. By forming, making, and building outdoors, we allow for a deeper, often transformational relationship within and beyond self. In this experiential outdoor workshop, we will explore, through art-making outdoors, the profound relationship between the environment and our emotional and psychological states. We will meet in the 8th floor lounge and then walk together to Central Park, where we will spend the entire workshop, so please be prepared and dress for all of nature's contingencies. This experience will introduce how Environmental Art Therapy can facilitate multidimensional outcomes for our clients. A theoretical explanation and examples of application will be offered in addition to direct practice.
2:30 pm - 5:30 pm
Eco-Mandala: Integrating Art, Body Psychotherapy, and Ecopsychology
Executive Conference Center - 1601 Broadway (enter on 48th Street)
Alexander Kopytin, PhD
The mandala is a circular configuration, a spiritual symbol that represents the universal realm in Buddhist and Hindu cultures. This half-day workshop will explore the theoretical and practical issues concerning the integration of art therapy, body psychotherapy and ecopsychology in the creative process of mandala-making. A brief overview of the cultural practices of mandala-making will be provided, followed by an introduction to various theoretical concepts and approaches including general systems theory, body psychotherapy, and ecopsychology to define the emerging field of eco-art therapy and to understand both clinical and non-clinical applications of mandala-making. The symbolic geometry of the mandala, as well as other natural circular forms will be considered from the eco-art therapeutic perspective. Participants will engage in an expressive, body-centered ritualized activity to concentrate on the connection between atmospheric/environmental and inner processes while creating mandalas using ecological materials.
