Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic School
Our Lady of Perpetual Help school is committed to quality education in both official languages fostering in our students respect for life and learning as Christ taught us.
Principal Message
The end of October marks the time we call Halloween. Our students tend to have an afternoon where they dress in costumes and have a lot of fun. In light of world events in the last few years we find that the concept of war and terrorism is much more predominant than it was in the past.
As parents, you may soon be purchasing or creating costumes for this event; however, as a school, we would ask that the children do not come in costumes that represent violence or war and also ask that they do not bring props that represent weapons of any sort.
God Bless,
M. Morin

A Reading From The Gospel for Sunday, October 27, 2019
Jesus also told this parable to some who trusted in themselves that they were righteous and regarded others with contempt:
"Two men went up to the temple to pray, one a Pharisee and the other a tax collector. The Pharisee, standing by himself, was praying thus, "God, I thank you that I am not like other people: thieves, rogues, adulterers, or even like this tax collector. I fast twice a week; I give a tenth of all my income."
But the tax collector, standing far off, would not even look up to heaven, but was beating his breast and saying, "God, be merciful to me, a sinner!"
I tell you, this man went down to his home justified rather than the other; for all who exalt themselves will be humbled, but all who humble themselves will be exalted."
The Gospel of the Lord.

Yearly Digital Consent
Dear Parents,
``A personally owned device must meet the educational needs of the school and district. The ability for a student to use any form of technology within school is a privilege. If the student doesn’t follow the guidelines the student may lose the privilege of using the device and network access may be suspended.``
" The student must comply with a staff request to shutdown the device or put the screen to sleep"
" Violation of any EICS School Board policies, Administrative Procedures, Responsible Use Agreement, this user agreement or school rules involving a student’s personally owned device may result in the loss of use of the device in school and/or disciplinary action"
During instructional time, students have the privilege to use their devices, but if they are playing games, etc, they are guilty of not following the contract they have signed.
As parents, if you have any questions or concerns, please contact Mme Moniz at simone.moniz@eics.ab.ca or 780-467-5631.

If your child brings in any pairs of shoes, please make sure they collect a "donation ticket" from either Mme Winland or Mme McRobert in the school office or a leadership team memeber. One donation ticket per pair of shoes will be given to the student. A draw on November 2 will be made for a prize.
In collaboration with Coats for Kids and Families, we will be a drop off location for any new or used winter wear (Coats, toques, mitts, etc.) from now until November 1, 2019. These winter items will be dry cleaned thanks to Page the Cleaner and distributed throughout our communities.
Thank you for your efforts to help both our community and our environment.

Insight Testing
Insight is a group-administered test of cognitive abilities, which will be administered to all grade 5 and 8 classes in the first week of November. The assessment is designed to measure cognitive abilities including reasoning, comprehension, memory, and visual/auditory processing.
Students do not need to study for this type of assessment, and the results are not used to evaluate their school achievement. The results provide information to help teachers recognize student strengths and plan for additional supports as needed.
If you would like to learn more about this assessment tool, please visit http://www.canadiantestcentre.com and select the Insight tab near the top of the page. While there you may also want to look into the CAT-4 academic assessment tool, which will be used to measure overall academic ability of Grade 4 and 7 students in the spring.
Lunch Hour Changes!
In order to allow more space on fields and to proactively prevent negative student altercations, we are going to try a new system.
For grade 7 & 8, nothing changes. The students will eat first and then go outside for recess.
However, for the students in grades 5 & 6, the lunch schedule will be flipped. The students will immediately go go outside to play at 12:04 p.m. and come inside to eat their lunch at 12:25 p.m.
Hopefully this will lead a more pleasant outdoor experience for all.
If you have any questions or concerns, please contact M. Morin at alyrem@eics.ab.ca

End of Day Procedures
Please make sure that you child(ren) know if they are to take the bus or if they are getting picked up at the end of the day.
Should a student need to confirm their end of day plans, we ask that all students make their arrangements during the morning recess (10:19 a.m. - 10:34 a.m.) or during the lunch hour (12:04 p.m. - 12:47 p.m.).
This will reduce the confusion and rush at the end of the day and will also ensure that your child(ren) does not miss the bus.
If a student comes to the office at the end of the day and are unsure how they are getting home, we will be sending them home on the bus.
