A hugh THANK YOU to the parent volunteers who went on the Fox River Environmental Ed. Field Trip. We could not have done it with out you!
Our Learning
The workshops for Reading, Writing and Math are being established. The district wide workshop model includes whole group mini lessons, small guided groups and application time for practice. The kids are doing a great job getting in these routines.
Literacy:
Our first unit in reading will focus on community, integrating social studies and literacy. We are in the process of learning about various communities around the world and what impacts them! Literature Discussion Groups are in progress and the kids are loving the books.
Also during literacy, we are participating in Word Study. This is a program that is not the traditional way to teach spelling. We will look at the roots of words and studying patterns. Please see the attached letter for more information.
Math
The classes are finishing up on Unit 1. There will be an assessment on Monday, Sept.30th.
The students were given a study guide this week which covers the Unit 1 learning concepts.
Our Unit 1 Number Concepts
- Describe the place value of numeral digits relative to both the place to the right and the place to the left (decimal to thousandths and whole numbers to billions).
- Rounding of numbers using the number line
- Powers of 10
Matific
The students also have started to explore Matific, the new online math program. Matific replaces TenMarks, and so far the kids really have enjoyed working with it. Since it is brand new not only to students, but to the classroom teachers, too, we all will be learning the "bells & whistles" of this program.
Digital Citizenship
- Home & Lock Screen needs a picture of your student
- IPads need to be fully charged each night
- The IPad is a school tool and should be used only for school related purpose.
The teachers went over the form if the districts expectation are not met. Please review the form link:

The District's Fifth Grade Cross Country Run
The Rose Glen Run Club began last week! The practices focused on building stamina and giving students some running strategies. Next week we will run further in the Rose Glen neighborhood. The coaches have been so impressed with the enthusiasm that our runners have shown to their teammates. The kids have been cheering each other to do their best.
The coaches want to give a BIG thank you to the parents for being prompt when picking up their runners!
Just a reminder: If you student plans on participating, please be sure your runner has a water bottle, the kids need to stay hydrated. If you or your student feel it's too hot run, the choice of staying for Run Club is up to you and your child. If there is inclement weather conditions, we will cancel the run club. Also, there is no bussing from Run Club, so arrangements for your child's transportation will be needed. Links to the cross country packet and the run club permission form are below.
There is still time to join the run club or run in the 5th Grade Optimist District Cross Country Race. Just fill out the permission forms found in the links below.
