HSE 21 Family Information Night
Please join us on Tuesday, January 19 at 6:30 pm for an information night! Our team from central office will be joining us to talk about HSE 21 and the 1:1 iPad roll-out at the K-4 elementary grades. We will be meeting in the HPE Cafeteria and you can enter the building through Door 2. If you are unable to attend please watch this quick video and visit the links below to learn more about our HSE 21 initiative.
Beginning 2016 - 2017 School Year for Elementary Schools--
As HSE continues to expanded the 1:1 program, each student currently in grades 5 - 8 requires an iPad during the day at school. Each student in grades K-4 will use an iPad during their day at school beginning in the fall of 2016. Device requirements for the iPad are as follows:
Model Requirement: iPad 2, iPad 3, iPad 4 (iPad Retina), iPad Air, iPad Air 2
(Note: an iPad Mini of any model does not meet NWEA or ISTEP testing hardware requirements)
Memory Size: 16 GB or greater
Internet: Firewalls and filters will enable secure use of Wi-Fi at school. Therefore, no additional purchase of data plans/cellular/3G/LTE connection is needed.
Families may provide their own iPad or rent an iPad for $125 per school year (rental includes iPad 2 or newer model, insurance, case, charging cord and brick). Visit http://www.hse.k12.in.us/ADM/academics/hse21/ to find more information about HSE’s 1:1 program.
Notes from the Nurse
With the weather being so fickle and ever-changing, please make sure to pack hats and mitties in your student’s back pack. Also, please pack an extra pair of pants for times the mud puddles may get the best of your student. Since the clinic’s supply of boys athletic pants are low (the athletic pants are stretchy and can fit a wider range of kids), I prefer not to call a parent to bring dry clothes or have the student sit in wet pants for the afternoon.
Thanks!
HPE Cafeteria News
On Tuesday February 19th we will be celebrating January Birthdays! Any student who purchases a meal that day will receive free a Rice Krispie Treat!
Parents please make sure you are signed up thru Skyward to receive low balance emails for your students lunch account. As per HSE policy for elementary students “If a student is at $0.00 they are allowed to charge one meal. Once the account is negative the student should be given a debit meal until the account is in positive standing or they have money in hand to cover the purchase.”
When sending cash in with your student please put it in an envelope with their name, student ID number, and teacher's name. Please write your child’s student ID number on checks.
As a reminder if there is a two hour delay breakfast will not be served. On half days we do serve breakfast.
If you are packing a lunch for your child, we do not allow soda or foods that need to be reheated.
Due to limited space, we will can only accept 10 parents (including siblings) each day. Please call the office by 9:30 AM. If you are ordering a lunch, please let the office staff know when you call in. Please do not bring in food from fast food restaurants. You must have a valid background check on file, have watched the anti-bullying video, and completed the video survey. Please do not use cell phones during your visit. Per HSE student private policy, taking pictures are prohibited.
Please contact me with any questions or concerns.
--- Mrs. Berling, Food Services Manager
Delays and Closings
This is a friendly reminder that with the Winter season, the chance of inclement weather is greater. We wanted to make sure that parents are aware of the schedules below:
TWO-HOUR DELAY-- In the event that the school district deems a two hour delay is necessary, school will run from 11am-3:40 am. Breakfast will not be served, but lunch will be served. School doors will be unlocked at 10:45 am. Buses will run 2 hours behind, so if your student normally gets on the bus at 8:30 am, then a 2 hour delay means that he/she will get on the bus at 10:30 am.
BEFORE AND AFTER SCHOOL YMCA PROGRAM-- The YMCA before and after school program will be open during their regularly scheduled hours on days that Hamilton Southeastern Schools are experience a two-hour delay. When Hamilton Southeastern Schools are closed for weather related issues, the YMCA school care is closed as well.
SKYLERT INSTANT ALERT SYSTEM-- With the weather changing, it is important to make sure you have updated the contact information for the Skylert Instant Alert System. This systems allows the school to notify parents of emergencies and /or changes to the school's regular schedule more quickly and conveniently. Skylert brings critical and/or changing news directly to the intended audience, as parents can select how and where they receive messages/ Parents should update the information in the system annually which can include work phone, cell phone, and email. Updates to Skylerts can be made at anytime by logging into Skyward Family Access at: https://sis.hse.k12.in.us/scripts/wsisa.dll/WService=wsEAplus/seplog01.w
Attendance Line Voicemail
If your child will be absent from school, please call the HPE Attendance Line by 9:00 a.m. at 915-4210. If you know in advance that your child will be absent, you may call the attendance line's voicemail anytime and leave a message. If you know your student will be absent for more than two school days for any reason other than illness, we ask that you complete a Prearranged Absence Form (available in the HPE office) at leas one week prior to the absence.
Student attendance at HPE is vitally important. Please make every attempt possible to plan appointments and vacations outside of school hours. Regular attendance improves student performance and is expected as an integral part of our state mandated School Improvement Plan.
Sign In Procedures
As a reminder, the sign in procedure at Harrison Parkway includes signing your child in or out using a computer. If you are signing your child out of school, please have your driver's license with you, as you will need it to complete the sign-out process.

Response-to-Instruction (RtI)
RtI is a general education initiative designed to provide high quality instruction and interventions matched to student needs, and using learning rate over time and level of performance to make important educational decisions. The RtI model is based on a three-tiered model of service delivery with a focus on early intervention and prevention of academic and behavioral concerns. Data collected during this process provides valuable information regarding students’ educational progress and response to interventions. Students who do not demonstrate a response to well-implemented, scientifically-based interventions at the Tier 3 level would be referred for an educational evaluation to determine eligibility for special education. RtI is a component of HSE’s Child Find Process.

National Winnie the Pooh Day Celebration - Jan. 17
Books, cartoons, movies; Winnie the Pooh and his friends have been a childhood favorite since they were created by A.A. Milne in 1882. Winnie the Pooh came to life in these classic novels and for the third consecutive year Fishers Parks & Recreation is bringing him to Fishers for a free, National Winnie the Pooh Day celebration. Families are invited to Cumberland Park on Sunday, Jan. 17th from 1 to 4 p.m. The celebration includes:
- Photo opportunities with Winnie the Pooh! Charge the batteries and don’t forget a camera, these photographs will be memories that last a lifetime.
- Opportunities to play inside. Let’s face it, January weather is tricky. Indoor activities will include coloring pages, table top games and light refreshments to enjoy while warming up.
- A.A. Milne’s characeters also brought to life Pooh Sticks, and families will have the chance to play Winnie the Pooh’s favorite game on the bridge. Outdoor activities also feature the chance to build an Eeyore House from sticks, explore animal artifacts and books to enjoy at the 100 Acre Wood story nook.
Winnie the Pooh Day is a drop-in program, meaning families are welcome to stop by any time during the event. This program offers a unique opportunity for children to learn more about our environment through these famous characters. Those planning to stop by are encouraged to wear their favorite Winnie the Pooh clothing, bring their favorite stuffed animals to enjoy the party and share photos from the event on Facebook and Twitter.

City of Fishers Creates New Opportunities for Resident Engagement
After outlining 2015 priorities in his State of the City address, Mayor Fadness emphasized the importance of resident engagement and the lasting impact that engagement has on our community. Within the last year, residents have risen to that challenge by volunteering to mentor, beautifying public spaces and even getting more engaged with City Council meetings and Mayor’s Night Out events to learn about community happenings. Once again, the City of Fishers is offering another opportunity for residents to improve their knowledge of the Constitution and Bill of Rights.
Teaming up with Robert Leming, National Director of We the People program, the City of Fishers is offering a 6 week course titled Constitution 101 for residents 18 and older. Classes will begin on Wednesday, Feb. 24, and will take place on Tuesdays, ending on Tuesday, Mar. 29. Classes are free to attend and take place from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. in the City Hall Auditorium or at the Fishers Fire Department as indicated.
Each participant will receive the We the People: The Citizen and The Constitution textbook and a pocket constitution. We the People is sponsored by the Fishers City Council, Hamilton Southeastern Schools and the Indiana Bar Foundation. While free to attend, registration is required.
Additional information about weekly meeting topics, and to secure a spot in We the People, please visit www.fishers.in.us/WTP. Questions about the program can be directed to Robert Leming at leming@civiced.org.
