Fine Arts - Visual
The Visual Arts Department at GHS has been busy this Spring season with several art shows and competitions:
Many of our top photography students submitted entries to the Emerge Show. Congratulations to Trini Guevara, Brooke Pusillo, Luke Buneo, Xana Wilcoxson, Raena Kline, and Emilio Trujillo for making it through the jury process! You can see their work at Art Intersection in the Heritage District of Gilbert( www.ArtIntersection.com ). The show runs from April 23 to May 21.
Several students have submitted work to hang at the Art One Gallery in Scottsdale. Congratulations to Charlyn Absalon, Amber Agoodie, Xana Wilcoxson, Michelle Quiggle, Niki Pope, Arianna Eckblad, and Izzy Scherrer for making the jury cuts for this show! You can see their work at the Art One Gallery in Scottsdale off of Marshall Way and Indian School Road ( www.ArtOneGalleryInc.com ) now through April 20.
Over 100 students participated in our 6th Annual Art Attack at the Water Tower on March 26. Current Gilbert High School and Campo Verde students showed their work in an open air gallery under the Water Tower in Gilbert, participated in a community art studio, and enjoyed live music from ………, all musicians associated with Gilbert High School. We are proud that the silent auction raised over $3600 for the Mia Tennant Scholarship Fund, allowing us to send many students to art classes while they are away for the summer.
Many of our students will also be participating in the Annual Gilbert District Art Show held at the district office. Then opening for this show is Monday April 25 from 6pm to 8pm.
Photography students will have an opportunity to show in the Drive-Thru Gallery ( www.rooseveltrow.org/business-profiles/drive-thru-gallery-studio/ ) in Phoenix for May First Friday. We are excited for this new opportunity to show off our artist’s work!
During this busy season, we have also won a grant to purchase a 3-D printer for the Metals Jewelry Lab. The printer will be used to enhance our casting and design processes for jewelry making.__________________________

U.S. Navy S.T.E.M. Visit
U.S.Navy paid GHS a visit and brought their Big Rig to present S.T.E.M opportunities. Students who participated had a fantastic time, and it was one of the coolest things to be able to drive the bomb robots.

Physical Education
Students in the PE department have been very active and productive in the 2015-16 school year!
Dance students of all levels performed in two dance concerts in December and February. Our performance class, Danceworks, will present “Lost in Love”, on April 28th, 29th at 7:00 pm in GHS Auditorium. This concert will showcase Danceworks, Advanced and Beginning dancers’ talents and artistry.
The fourth annual GHS Unified PE Basketball Invitational was held in December and our guests, Campo Verde UPE, were fun and skilled opponents. GHS UPE athletes’ jerseys were provided by Guess Club and personalized by Mrs. Guthrie. Spectators included parents, administration and PE classes and was officiated by GHS Varsity Basketball Players. A post game celebration allowed athletes from both Campo and GHS UPE to socialize and congratulate everyone’s efforts.
GHS PE Department is committed to preparing our students to be actively and positively engaged!

GHS Track & Field
Two of our students recently set new GHS school records. Kelton Hicks set a new school record in the 100 meter dash at 10.83 sec. The old record was 10.92 s set in 1988.
Alyisa Waite set new school records in both the 100 meter hurdles and, with less than 10 minutes rest, the 100 meter dash. She set the 100m hurdles new record edging out the reigning State Champion at 14.16 seconds. The old record was 14.47 s set in 1995.
In addition, Alysia set a 100 meter dash record taking second by .03 seconds to the reigning 100m State Champion 12.04 seconds. The old record was 12.30 s set in 1990.

Unified PE Spring Dance
GHS PE hosted our spring dance, “Flower Power”, for all of our Special Education students. PE students helped decorate the venue and STUCO provided jammin’ music, refreshments and a photo booth. Fitness activities in Unified PE prepare our students for non stop dancing enjoyment. Kudos to Sara Lazar and her amazing Student Council students for setting it all up!

Teacher Recognition By A Parent
I would like to pay a huge compliment to one of our GHS English teachers, Kate Fisher. Carson has her for Honors Freshman English this year. Her organization in the classroom and communication with parents throughout the school year has been outstanding and I just wanted to let you know that her hard work is greatly appreciated. Ms. Fisher sends frequent updates on what the students are working on and it has helped us to stay organized and on task at school and at home. Her dedication and enthusiasm shows, and we appreciate all of the effort and work that she has put in this year to help make GHS a great place to be.

GHS Tennis Recognition By A Parent/Coach
I had planned to reach out to you last week and kicked myself, after reading Scott Bordow's article on Friday, that I hadn't done it sooner. As well as being head basketball coach at Corona Del Sol, my wife and I are also the parents of twin boys with Autism. Our boys, Marcus and Isaac, attend Gilbert High and Isaac was the young man Mason Saul played for his JV match. I was there along with Isaac's brother and older sister. I watched the match unfold, and it was obvious early what was happening. Mason was very understanding of the limitations of his opponent. He endured bad line calls and some very creative score keeping on Isaac's part. It was clear that Mason's intent was to ensure our son had a positive experience. Did he ever! Isaac had never played tennis until a few weeks ago. He is still learning the rules and how to actually play. What Mason did for Isaac, and actually for our whole family that day, will stay with us for quite some time.
I had the opportunity to shake Mason's hand after the match and thank him, but I want him to realize how much his seemingly small gesture means. The article about his act will be retweeted over and over. Other people will read it, and the idea of similar acts will continue to spread. Kids like ours and families like ours will benefit from it. He has made a difference!
Our biggest fear sending our boys to high school was that students would take advantage of their naive ways, and lack of social awareness. When events like this happen, along with other special events that have taken place at Gilbert High this year regarding our boys, it reaffirms our trust in the capacity young people have for understanding and compassion. We hear all too often about the negative side of sports, so it is important to point out the outstanding things done by young athletes. Please feel free to share this with anyone you believe will benefit from reading it. Thank Mason for us once again!
Coach Mac

CGCC Teal & Silver Award Winner
The Chandler-Gilbert Community College (CGCC) Teal & Silver Awards Program was created to recognize the contributions of individuals (non-employees) who support CGCC students, employees, programs, services, and the college community.
The college collaborates with community and school partners to serve our students and we rely on community support to achieve our goals. It is appropriate to recognize the contributions of our colleagues, partners, supporters, alumni, and community leaders in the success of our students.
GHS's very own Mary Fisk is one of only nine winners of this award. Congratulations on your accomplishment Ms. Fisk!

27th Annual Japanese Speech Contest
Gilbert High School had the honor of hosting the 27th Annual Japanese Speech Contest on Sunday, April 17th. I would like to thank Mr. Stroud for giving his inspiring speech, and the two MCs, Jocelyn Barraza and Vincent Nguyen, for their wonderful contribution. I would also like to recognize Julissa Munoz, Scarlet Shearin, Jacqueline Marquez, and Noah Alford who all competed. Both Scarlet Shearin and Jacqueline Marquez received the second place award for their category. Congratulations, Scarlet and Jacqueline!
Lastly, I would like to thank all of the teachers, students, parents and staff who supported and helped us prepare for this event (especially the Fine Arts and English departments). I’m thankful for the contributions from the students and their parents for their dedication and hard work to make this event a success.
