PM Playground Usage Reminder
1) All students utilizing the playground after school must have an adult present at the school. Students who walk home without an adult need to head straight home after the 3:30PM dismissal time.
2) Our SACC program needs the playground clear from 3:45PM-6:00PM each day.
M-STEP Testing Continues
Each spring, the State of Michigan and the US Department of Education (USDE) require us to assess students in certain subject areas through the M-STEP, PSAT and SAT. The assessments provide the district with a snapshot of student achievement at the state, district, and building levels. Individual student results will also be shared with parents.
The tentative assessment dates for M-Step are as follows:
3rd Grade
Tuesday, April 25 - Math
4th Grade
Monday, April 24 - ELA *Date Change
Tuesday, May 2 - Math
5th Grade
Wednesday, April 26 - Math
Thursday, May 4 - Social Studies
Wednesday, May 10 - Science
6th Grade
Wednesday, May 3 - ELA
Tuesday, May 9 - Math
Please ensure that your child is well rested on their testing day. They should come to school with a fully charged iPad .
Please note- We have makeup days built into our testing schedule, so if your child is exhibiting any symptoms of illness on their testing day- be sure to keep them home.
Also, due to recent updates in State testing procedures, cell phones, smart watches, and any bluetooth device (including headphones) MUST be secured during testing. We encourage students to leave these devices home on testing days when possible. When not possible, devices will be powered down and secured during testing.
Are you returning to Salk in the Fall?
We are beginning to plan for the 2023-2024 school year at this time. It would be extremely helpful for us to know whether or not your child will be returning to Fraser in the fall. We are asking each family to help us with this process by completing the form below. Please take a moment to fill it out. Please complete one form PER CHILD.
We greatly appreciate your assistance planning for next school year!
Dress Code
As the weather warms, now seems like an appropriate time to revisit the dress code. This is a district policy, which is accessible as part of our Student Code of Conduct. The purpose of our dress code is to make sure that our students are dressed for learning success. Parents will be called to bring a change of clothing when students do not follow the district policy.
Here are some of the most pertinent dress code guidelines. The following types of clothing are inappropriate for school and WILL NOT BE ALLOWED :
● Hats, caps, hoods, bandannas, or other head coverings
● See-through clothing or clothing that reveals students’ midriffs, bottoms, or undergarments
● Shorts, skirts and dresses shorter than the tip of the student’s index finger when arms are hanging down.
● Clothes or accessories displaying offensive words and symbols including those related to alcohol, illegal/controlled substances, tobacco products, weapons, sexual references and/or language disruptive to the educational process.
● Beach-type footwear with exposed toes that can be dangerous during recess play. Sandals with heel straps are allowed.

Ice Cream Social Donations
The Salk PTO is excited to offer our annual Ice Cream Social. The Ice Cream Social is an annual Salk Family event and fundraiser for our school. There will be food trucks, a DJ, photo booth, inflatables, activities, and of course ice cream. The fundraiser portion of the event is gift raffles.
The PTO has worked hard to bring back a lot of activities and offer new events this year now that pandemic restrictions have lifted. They have worked hard to bring these events at the lowest cost possible. With the addition of this year's events to the PTO budget, an admission fee will be required for this year's Ice Cream Social. The final price of admission will be determined by the amount of donations of individuals and businesses.
If you would like to make a monetary donation to the PTO you can do so at this link. As an added incentive, the classroom with the highest total percentage of participation will win a pizza party from the PTO.
Additionally, the PTO is looking for donations for the raffles. Please contact the PTO at ptosalk@gmail.com if you would like to donate.
All donations will help lower the final admission price for everyone.
Thank you for your consideration.
Charlie the Therapy Dog
Charlie has made several visits to Salk with great success. Students are happy to see him and he really brightens the mood. Charlie will be coming back on Tuesday (4/25/23). Now that students and Charlie have become acquainted with one another, Charlie has started making visits in classrooms and saying hello to students.
Charlie's purpose is to ease student's anxieties and increase positive emotions. We do not want his presence to cause fear or anxiety. As a reminder, parents have the ability to opt out of having their student interact with Charlie. If you DO NOT want your student to be around Charlie, then please fill out the opt out form linked here.
For the safety of students with allergies and Charlie, he will not be in the lunch room. Charlie will also remain out of classrooms in which parents have a student who opt out. Charlie will be under my supervision and kept on a leash at all times.
Rules for Interacting with Charlie:
Use calm bodies and inside voices when around Charlie.
Always ask before petting Charlie.
Don't take food around Charlie/feed Charlie
