Principal's Pulse

We have so much to be thankful for each day! We have wonderful students who strive to be their best each day excited to learn new things. We are blessed with fantastic teachers and staff who provide an atmosphere conducive to learning and give their all making a difference in our students' lives. We have parents and volunteers who serve above and beyond to make our campus a terrific learning environment filled with fun and unique experiences. We have a PTA organization that provides time, service, programs and funds to enable our students a richer school experience. Thank you for being a part of VAES!

We appreciate all of the effort that went into making last Friday a beautiful evening for our female students as they danced the night away with their daddies. Please visit the PTA Facebook page to tag yourself in some action pics taken that night.

Next week, we will have quarterly tests for our 1st - 4th grade students. Please see the schedule listed below. Please encourage your child to do their very best to show off their learning.

Heart Healthy Month

This week in the gym Coach Ingram and Coach Hernandez made a Heart Course showing the students how the blood and oxygen flow through your heart. The students are learning about the four chambers of the heart (left/right atrium and left/right ventricle) along with the pulmonary artery, multiple valves and the aorta which carries oxygen to your brain and body. The students have enjoyed the course thoroughly while actively modeling this process.

The coaches have a request. Please start collecting Scrabble tiles that you might find in garage sales for an activity planned for next year in the gym. Thank you for your help!

3rd Grade Book Clubs

Our 3rd graders are reading novels and discussing their learning to build comprehension skills together. I had the pleasure of seeing the groups in action this week sharing their thinking, making connections and helping one another understand the text.

Look Who Came to Visit Today!

The Tooth Fairy came to visit our Kindergarten, 1st and 2nd graders today to discuss dental hygiene and the importance of caring for our teeth. We want to thank our neighbors at Van Alstyne Dental for the program and the packages they provided for each student.

Memorial Scholarship

An endowed scholarship is being set up through the Van Alstyne Education Foundation to honor Reagan and Grant Small. All donations are tax free and will help us to continue to honor the memory of these two precious children for years to come. Checks can be made payable to the VAEF with Reagan and Grant's name in the memo line. You may send your monetary donation to:

Van Alstyne Education Foundation
P.O. Box 1620
Van Alstyne, TX 75495

With an endowed scholarship once the requirements are met, the foundation will be able to give a scholarship each year without having to continuously raise the money yearly. Karen and her family will be able to present this scholarship and continue to keep the memory of her children alive for years to come. If you could help with any amount at all, it will be GREATLY appreciated.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact Sarah Coleman at 903-816-4321 or

Looking for ways to serve our students...

Your VAES PTA is looking to fill officer, committee, and volunteer positions for the 2016-2017 school year. The PTA is a vital organization for our school and our children, and it cannot be a success without volunteers like you. There are many opportunities ranging from positions that require very little time each year to more involved board positions that require time each week. If you are looking for a way to connect with your child’s school, PTA is a great avenue. For more information, please email Jenna Hughes at
