Notes from the Office
Student safety is important to us! Parents picking up or dropping off children are reminded to have students exit/enter curbside ONLY.
Please pull up as far as safely possible to the next car before having students exit your vehicle. Please follow the direction of the safety patrol assistants.
Stay off your cell phones when you are not idling. Use this time to talk with your child or enjoy a read along chapter book. They are young, but for such a little time.
Tune in and turn off!

With the second part of ISTEP on the way, I thought I would provide you with some tips to help your child do their best on the test.
Relaxation is important and can assist with lowering stress levels, help with better sleep, improve mood and memory, and reduce the chance of physical illness.
R – Read the question carefully then reread the passage or problem to find the right answer.
E – Examine every answer choice before you choose your answer.
L – Label your answer in the passage or in the problem.
A - Always check your work.
X – X-out answers that cannot possibly be correct.
Additional tips to remember:
Make sure your students are on time for school each day.
Avoid taking your student out for doctor’s appointments during testing times. Students will feel more at ease when taking the test at the same time as their classmates.
Get a good night’s sleep each night. Students cannot do their best if they are sleepy.
Eat a good breakfast!
Encourage your child to do their best!
If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to give me a call at 259-3743. Thank you! - Mrs. Shell

What's Happening in Gym?
Elm Road Families:
First thru fifth graders have finished a basketball unit along with Jump for Heart. Congratulations to our school for raising $12, 370 for American Heart Association! Students demonstrated incredible growth with jumping skills and hopefully have shared with you many ways they can take care of their heart! Those raising $100 or more will have a lunch with Dr. Soto Kile on March 27. The top four fund raisers from each grade have been invited for snacks and celebration in the gym after school with Mrs. Parisi on March 22. During our basketball unit, students improved with passing, dribbling and shooting skills through drills and lead up games! We definitely targeted good sportsmanship and how to be a cooperative teammate during this unit. On St. Patrick's Day we all enjoyed a game of Leprechaun Tag.
Thank you for all that have turned in permission slips for skating. Students may bring their own safety gear from home to use during skating (helmet, knee pads, elbow pads, wrist guards). There will be wrist guards and kneed pads provided from Skatetime. Once we finish our skating unit, we will be starting a volleyball unit (bumping, setting, serving, team play, ready position, rotating etc..) All grades continue to develop perceptual motor skills with our "Minds-in-Motion Maze" through balancing, jumping and landing, visual strengthening, catching, skipping, cross lateral integration (crossing mid line). The upper grades will be completing the final round of fitness testing as well.
Practices for all interested fourth and fifth graders for running club will be starting the Friday after spring break. This will be a great opportunity for all those students wanting to train to run the Silver Mile at Penn High School on Saturday, May 5th . A permission slip has been sent home with the interested 4/5 graders. Mark your calendars for April 30th for our “Running is Elementary” meet at Elm Road for those students that participate in Elm Road Running Club.
Super job to all the 4/5 grade boys that participated in the intramural basketball program. The boys demonstrated a great deal of improvement due to their effort and enthusiasm for the game!
Our “Fun in the Sun” date is scheduled for Tuesday, June 5th . A sign up has been sent home asking for parent volunteers for this date! Thank you to all the parents willing to help lead a station.
Please remind your child to wear tennis shoes that fit securely on his/her feet for gym class!
Greetings from Elm Road's Music Room
In April, students will be studying composer of the month, Joseph Haydn. Here's a little bit more of what each grade is working on.
1st: So, Mi and La songs with instrument accompaniment. Silly songs using the major scale.
2nd: Do, Re, and Mi songs. Singing in 2 parts.
3rd: Singing in rounds. Begin xylophone unit.
4th and 5th: Concert preparation and memorization, using good tone and with an emphasis on vowels for the choir.
*4th grade is performing at 5:30 pm on May 15th and 5th grade is performing at 7:00pm on May 15th.
