The Cyclone Watch
November 2021
Principal Updates
Teachers have started communicating with families regarding Parent Teacher Conferences. Conferences will be held November 9th and 11th from 3:00-6:30p.m. We will be offering scheduled appointments either via zoom or in-person. Please follow up with teachers individually if you have questions or need help with signing up. School will not be in session on November 12th.
Our 8th grade students will be going on a field trip to the Lyceum Theatre on Tuesday, November 2nd. Students will have the opportunity to watch the show, "Artrageous." We are excited to have our students get this opportunity through the CPS Fine Arts Department. Students will attend from 8a.m.-12p.m.
Media Center News
The media center mornings are gaining momentum. We are seeing more kids before school. They are playing our many board games. We have added Trouble and checkers to our mix. Connect 4, Uno and chess continue to be popular choices as well. Students sit and talk to friends, read books, color, and work on puzzles. We have a lot of options for kids to hang with friends and this is a great opportunity to make new friends as well. Please encourage your student to check out this fun space.
Please remind your student that iPads need to be fully charged and at school. We are seeing more students coming to school without the iPads. Also, we are seeing more students who are misusing iPads. Please remember that iPads are CPS devices and not a student's personal device which means a teacher can ask for the iPad anytime it is misused or becomes a distraction.
Cyclone Book Club
Cyclone Book Club generally meets on the last Thursday of every month. We do make exceptions for calendar conflicts. In October we met on the 21. Our group enjoys spending time hanging out. We talk about books, play the media center board games and do some reading.
We take new members at any time. We can check out books during this time and make book recommendations to one another. Mrs. Kiley is the sponsor. Please check with her if you have any questions.

Nurse's Notes
It is NOT too soon to get your future 8th grade student immunized!
The State Of Missouri requires ALL 8th grade students to receive the TDAP and Meningitis vaccine. A child can be given these shots anytime after age 10. Please submit written proof of the vaccine to the school nurse.
**If your student did not participate in the school flu vaccine clinic, you can still get a FREE flu shot at the Boone County Health Department at 1005 West Worley Street**
If your student has gotten the Covid vaccine recently, send a picture of their vaccine card to Nurse Betty to record the dates. A vaccinated student is not required to quarantine if they are a close contact and have no symptoms.
Important!
During the school year there is an increased incidence of respiratory illnesses. It can sometimes be difficult to decide when to send your child to school and when you should not. Here are a few helpful hints to keep everyone as healthy as possible. Many symptoms listed here can also be Covid. Please keep your student HOME if you suspect an illness. If you are getting your child tested for Covid, they must stay home until you have the test results. Send a screen shot of the test results to Nurse Betty for the record.
Students will be sent home and should NOT come to school if during the previous 24 hours they have exhibited any of the following symptoms:
- Temperature of 100.4 degrees or greater without medication to reduce fever
- Vomiting and/or diarrhea
- Unusual or unexplained generalized rash
- Persistent cough
- Remember, there is NO elevator in the original portion of Jefferson Middle School. If your student will be on crutches, please notify the health room staff.
To keep your child as healthy as possible during the school year:
- Wash hands frequently with soap and water for at least 20 seconds.
- Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when sneezing or coughing and dispose of the tissue in a proper trash receptacle.
- Avoid sharing drinks, water bottles or silverware with others.
- Obtain your seasonal flu vaccine.
- Get plenty of rest.
- Maintain a healthy diet.
Ø Remember that your student can carry a one day supply of Tylenol or Ibuprofen and cough drops in their backpack in a package that is labeled by the manufacturer. The school nurse cannot give medication to any student unless directed to do so by a physician in writing.
Ø Please help the health room help your student. If your phone number changes it is very important that you notify the main office as soon as possible. A serious emergency can be a stressful time for your student and the health room must be able to reach a parent or guardian quickly.
Ø Send your student to school with a mask to wear and one for spare. We are finding many students are arriving with no mask. This means they are not wearing them on the bus. Help us keep each other safe!
Betty Cramer, RN, BSN ECramer@cpsk12.org and Sheryl Mitchell health secretary, are in the health room Monday-Friday 7 AM-3:30 PM. Phone 573-214-3213 or FAX 573-214-3399

Book of the Month Recommendation
Avery Grambs has a plan for a better future: survive high school, win a scholarship, and get out. But her fortunes change in an instant when billionaire Tobias Hawthorne dies and leaves Avery virtually his entire fortune. The catch? Avery has no idea why--or even who Tobias Hawthorne is. To receive her inheritance, Avery must move into sprawling, secret passage-filled Hawthorne House, where every room bears the old man's touch--and his love of puzzles, riddles, and codes.
Unfortunately for Avery, Hawthorne House is also occupied by the family that Tobias Hawthorne just dispossessed. This includes the four Hawthorne grandsons: dangerous, magnetic, brilliant boys who grew up with every expectation that one day, they would inherit billions. Heir apparent Grayson Hawthorne is convinced that Avery must be a con-woman, and he's determined to take her down. His brother, Jameson, views her as their grandfather's last hurrah: a twisted riddle, a puzzle to be solved. Caught in a world of wealth and privilege, with danger around every turn, Avery will have to play the game herself just to survive.
