Principal's Message
Dear Hallinan Families,
Happy New Year 2023! It's been a lot of fun being at Hallinan this week seeing our students excited and engaged in learning. The photo below is of Miss Nicky's Pre-K class. They decorated New Year crowns and talked about things they would like to learn this year. They also learned how to sign 2023 in American Sign Language!
If you have a current Pre-K aged student (incoming Hallinan Kindergartener for 2023-24 school year), we welcome you to join us for the District-wide in-person Kindergarten Information Night on Wednesday, January 18 from 6 to 7 pm. We'll introduce you to our kinder team, tell you about a life in the day of a kindergartener, tour a classroom and guide you through the registration process. Please pass on this important date to any kindergarten families you know. Registration opens on January 18.
Wishing you a happy, healthy 2023!
Melissa Griffiths

STEM with Mrs Doran
AiS = Architects in Schools COMING TO HALLINAN
Dear Hallinan Families with 5th grade students,
A very exciting opportunity is quickly approaching! I (Mrs. Doran) applied for a program called Architects in Schools and was accepted! All 5th graders will experience this in-house architect residency project in STEM January 23rd-February 10th!
In the AiS program, all students learn:
- That design is all around us and we make decisions every day that affect our environment.
- How the subjects they study in school apply to the real world outside of school.
- That design of the built environment affects and is affected by human behavior.
- That there are many people who create the spaces in which we live, learn, work and play, and some examples of their jobs (i.e. architects, landscape architects, structural and civil engineers, contractors, urban planners, etc.).
- Skills that help them work better in groups, communicate their ideas, and understand that designing and building spaces is a process as well as a product.
The AiS program is not trying to create “mini design professionals.” Although, some students realize through their participation in AiS that they’d like to grow up to design and build spaces, all students participating learn important skills through lessons that include cooperation and planning, connect to the Common Core and Next Generation Science Standards and help to gain a better sense of how school relates to the “real world.”
With the help of local professionals, our 5th graders "home" projects will take 2-3 weeks to complete. We can't wait to dive into this experience and I am so excited to share all the things with you!
There is only 1 thing needed from you -- Please complete the image release forms for AiS as soon as possible! Thank you for your help in making Hallinan such a special place to learn!

Hello Hallinan Families!
Slice of Gratitude
Thank you to all the parents who donated to our beloved support staff and specialty teachers. And to all the parents and Room Parents who made our regular class teachers feel loved and appreciated.
A very special thank you to our incredible hospitality team Catherine Stover and Audra Liron. They have been creating magic this year and we are so happy to have them on our team!
Missoula Children's Theater
If we are going to bring community theater to Hallinan, we need your help! May 1st through the 6th the famed Missoula Children's Theater is heading our way and we have several needs.
Housing needed!!!
Can you house one or two creative directors this spring? Missoula is sending two directors to audition and then teach up to 60 Hallinan kids how to perform. They will be working with K-5 and they need safe, comfortable housing to accomplish that huge feat. They each require their own room from April 30th-May 7th. Please see the Sign-up Genius below:
https://www.signupgenius.com/go/4090c4aa9ae2aa3f49-host#/
Piano player needed!!!
We need a piano player to accompany the cast at a few rehearsals and at both performances.
The rehearsal time requirements are Wednesday, May 3rd from 5:15-7:15. Thursday, May 4th from 2:15 to 7:15.
Then the dress rehearsal and first performance (at a school assembly) is on Friday, May 5th from 9:00 am to 2 pm. Saturday, May 6th the kids put on their final show for parents and family from 10 am-11 am.
We will be sending out a Sing-Up Genius but if you have any interest please reach out to our email address at any time hallinanpresident@gmail.com
Video Parent!!!
We would LOVE to capture one of the performances on video. According to Missoula Children's Theater, an amateur videographer usually captures one performance that the PTO can sell to parents. We will be hosting two performances. One on Friday, May 5th during school hours at 1pm and one the next day May 6th at 10 am which is for parents and family members.
We would be asking you to attend the Friday performance so you can get the flow of the play and then video the parents and family performance. We will be sending out a school-wide Sign-Up Genius soon but if you have any advanced interest please reach out to our email address hallinanpresident@gmail.com
Spring Carnival & Auction
We have several auction chair positions still open and one carnival chair position. Please see the details on the sign-up genius.

Oregon State Assessment Opt-Out Form
Each school year, Oregon students take assessments to meet federal requirements. The purpose of these assessments is to provide data that schools can use to ensure that every child is on track and achieving learning goals.
State law requires us to inform you that a form is available from the State Department of Education that allows you to opt your child out of the math and English Language Arts assessments for the current school year. Should you wish to opt out your child, fill out the form and submit it to the main office at your child’s school. Please note the submission deadlines listed on the form. Meeting the deadline will help the school with planning and preparation. If you wish your child not to participate in the science assessment for grades 5, 8, and 11, submit this request in writing to the principal of your child's school.
If you have questions or want more information about state assessments, please contact your child’s principal or teacher(s).

Safe Oregon
Parents-guardians who have concerns about a student’s well-being are encouraged to reach out to their principal, and to maintain strong lines of communication and partnership between students, families, staff, and other resources. SafeOregon is also an effective way to report a tip regarding safety threats or potential acts of violence to our students or schools.
(Students should also be aware that intentionally providing a false report is a serious offense.)
