The Pardoner's Tale

Greed is The Theme

Greed Is Out - Poem by Herbert Logerie

This poem is a great representation of The Pardoner's Tale. In the poem it talks about greed being evil in its own way. " Realized pain and unrealized gain..."( Logerie ). This small quote is perfect for The Pardoner's Tale because when greed took over the three friends, they did not realize what they were gaining in this. Yes they would get gold, but they will be charged with murder. What gain is that. Greed just causes a lot of pain to anyone around it. " ... he loved fame and money. What a disgrace! What a dishonest face!" ( Logerie ). This quote is works for the tale too. The three friends wanted money and fame. They would even kill one another to get it. That's a disgrace to what they had as friends. " What a dishonest face!" A greedy person can't be trusted. The three friends didn't trust each other right when they found the gold. http://www.poemhunter.com/poem/greed-is-out/

Linkin Park Lyrics - Lies Greed Misery

The song " Lies Greed Misery" has a great quote that works for The Pardoner's Tale. " You did it to yourself and it's over..." In The Pardoner's Tale, the three friends killed eachother over gold because they were greedy. One wanted the gold all for himself, and the two wanted to split it between them only. So they killed each other. They did it to them self. It was their own actions.

Avaritia (Greed), 1558 Pieter van der Heyden after Pieter Bruegel the Elder (Netherlandish, ca. 1525–1569)

In this picture, it show a perfect example of greed. Greed can make you do crazy thing even murder. In The Pardoner's Tale, the three friends killed eachother because they went crazy for gold. They thought it would be best to either have it all for their own or split it between two to have more, so they killed eachother. Greed made them go crazy for gold, so they killed eachother. http://www.metmuseum.org/toah/works-of-art/26.72.31

Quotes

These three quotes Sum up The Pardoner's Tale. " We are in danger of destroying ourselves by our greed and stupidity." ( Hawking ) This part of his quote sums up the theme of the tale. Greed and stupidity. The three friends showed that clearly. Their greed made them crazy for gold and their stupidity killed them.

"..... virtually no human being can resist." ( Weil ) No one can resist greed when it overwhelms you taking over you. That's what happened to the three friends int he tale. They were excited about the gold, that their greed over came them.

"It's a massive pressure that affects us all." ( Cantona ) Greed not only affects you, but the people around you. It's like a disease that spreads like rapid fire. In the tale, greed only affected one til he started planing to kill the other one. He said it aloud, so the other started to agree. So greed is a disease that can not only affect you, but others around you.

Stephen Hawking

" We are in danger of destroying ourselves by our greed and stupidity. We can not remain looking inward at ourselves on a small and increasing polluted and overcrowded planet."

Andrew Weil

" Fear and greed are potent motivaters. When both of these forces push in the same direction, virtually no human being can resist."

Eric Cantona

" We all seem to be about aggression and greed. It's a massive pressure that effects us all."

Duncan family's killings motivated by son's greed, police say

The Oklahoman. Juliana Keeping Published: October 19, 2014.

19-year-old freshman Alan J. Hruby murdered his family over money. He killed his whole family so he could have sole heir of the families money. Him planning to kill his family is unknown. If he is convicted he could face a maximum sentence or put to death.

Greed can make you do crazy things. In this case, murder your family to get all the money. Greed is a overwhelming thing that consumes the human mind and basically takes over you. It's like The Pardoner's Tale. Greed overwhelmed them and made them crazy for gold. Their solution like Alan's, kill the other to get what you want.
