Perinatal Intensive Training
A Postpartum Depression Training for Birth Professionals
Perinatal Mood and Anxiety Disorders: A primer on prevention, screening, identification and treatment for Doulas and Birth Professionals.
Perinatal mood and anxiety disorders affect around eighteen percent of all women nationally and sixty percent of women in Utah will report mild to moderate symptoms of Postpartum Depression. Well-researched but not widely understood, these illnesses are related to an increased risk of suicide, poor birth and neonatal outcomes, and long-term negative effects on child and maternal mental health.
This training will provide birth professionals with essential information on prevalence, unique symptomatology of mental health disorders in the perinatal period, screening tools, assessment protocols, and the unique needs of perinatal women who become hospitalized for psychiatric treatment. Special emphasis will be placed on utilizing tools for assessing risk, providing information to clients in a relatable way, and focusing on the prevention of emotional health issues during pregnancy. Concrete measures to improve birth outcomes related to anxiety and depression will be discussed and handouts, resources, and referrals within Salt Lake and Utah counties provided.
